1. Upgrade Your Oil Line for Maximum Safety

While the ATM4523 comes with a standard nylon tubing kit, we highly recommend upgrading to a braided stainless steel or copper line for any high-performance air-cooled VW. Mechanical gauges function by sending actual pressurized oil directly to the back of the gauge. In a VW Beetle or Dune Buggy, this means the line travels from the engine case, through the firewall, and into the dash. A nylon line can become brittle over time due to engine heat, potentially leading to a leak inside your cabin. Using a braided stainless steel line (typically -3 or -4 AN) provides a much higher level of protection against abrasion and heat, ensuring your oil stays inside the engine where it belongs.

2. Proper Case Tapping and Thread Sealing

When installing the pressure sender fitting into your VW engine case, it is vital to use the correct port. Most builders use the stock oil pressure switch location (near the distributor). If you want to keep your dashboard warning light active, you must use a ''T'' fitting or a specialized oil pressure relocation block. Always use a small amount of thread sealant on the NPT threads, but be extremely careful not to get any sealant inside the oil passage itself. Additionally, never over-tighten the fittings into the magnesium or aluminum case, as these threads are easily stripped. A snug fit with proper sealant is all that is required for a leak-free seal.

3. Maximize the Ultra-Nite Luminescence

The Ultra-Nite dial is designed to glow, but it performs best when it has been "charged" by a light source. If you are preparing for a night race or a late-evening cruise in your sand rail, ensure the gauge face is exposed to bright light for a few minutes prior to the sun going down. For street applications, the gauge still includes a standard bulb socket for traditional backlighting. We recommend wiring the internal light to your headlight switch so you have the benefit of the glow-in-the-dark face combined with standard illumination.
