Tip 1: Careful Capillary Line Routing

Since this is a mechanical gauge, it utilizes a 12-foot capillary tube filled with a volatile liquid. It is absolutely vital that you never kink, cut, or crimp this line during installation. If the line is severed, the gauge is permanently ruined and cannot be repaired. When routing the line from your engine case or radiator through the firewall of your VW, always use a rubber grommet to prevent the metal edges of the body from vibrating against the line. We recommend coiling any excess line in a safe, hidden location rather than trying to shorten it, as the system is factory-sealed for accuracy.

Tip 2: Optimal Sensor Placement for Air-Cooled Engines

If you are using this gauge to monitor oil temperature in an air-cooled VW engine, placement of the bulb is key. Many builders use a "T" fitting at the oil pressure switch location, but for the most accurate readings, we recommend using an oil taco or a specialized sump plate adapter. This ensures the probe is in the direct flow of the oil. Remember that the included 1/2 inch NPT fitting may require an adapter (such as a 1/2 inch NPT to 10mm or 1/8 inch NPT) depending on your specific VW oil relief or gallery plug setup. Always use a small amount of thread sealant, but ensure the probe itself makes good contact with the fluid.

Tip 3: Gauge Mounting and Vibration Dampening

The 2-5/8 inch gauge is larger and heavier than standard gauges, which means it puts more stress on your dashboard or mounting bracket.
