OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing your high-performance machine to the absolute limit, whether it''s a Subaru-swapped sand rail or a water-cooled Type 2 Bus conversion, monitoring your engine''s vitals isn''t just a luxuryit''s a necessity for survival. The AutoMeter 2-5/8 inch Ultra-Lite Water Temperature Gauge (ATM4432) represents the pinnacle of competition-grade instrumentation. Designed specifically for the rigors of motorsports, the Ultra-Lite series has become a staple in the air-cooled and off-road community for its weight-saving aluminum construction and unmistakable silver-face aesthetic. This gauge doesn''t just look the part; it provides the lightning-fast, accurate readings that professional racers demand when heat soak or cooling failure is a constant threat. The oversized 2-5/8 inch diameter offers significantly better visibility than standard 2-1/16 inch gauges, making it the preferred choice for dash panels where quick glances are all you can afford between obstacles.
Precision is the name of the game with the AutoMeter Ultra-Lite series. Featuring a mechanical movement, the ATM4432 operates independently of your vehicle''s electrical system for its core temperature readings, utilizing a liquid-filled capillary tube to provide a direct physical connection to the engine''s coolant. This ensures that even in the event of a total electrical failure or a dead alternator in the middle of the dunes, you still have an accurate read on your engine''s thermal status. The satin anodized aluminum dial is complemented by a high-contrast, bright red fluorescent pointer that pops against the silver background, while the perimeter incandescent lighting ensures you can track your temps during those late-night desert runs. If you are running a high-output water-cooled conversion in your VW or a custom off-road build, this gauge provides the rugged reliability and classic styling that Appletree Automotive customers have trusted for decades.
FITMENT
This is a universal 2-5/8 inch mechanical gauge. While primarily used in water-cooled engine applications, it is a favorite for the following Volkswagen and off-road projects:
- VW Beetle / Bug: Ideal for custom dashes in Subaru-swapped or Mazda-rotary-swapped sleepers (1950-1979).
- VW Bus / Transporter / Type 2: Perfect for monitoring cooling systems in Ford EcoTec or VW VR6 engine conversions (1950-1979).
- VW Karmann Ghia: Fits beautifully in custom performance-oriented instrument clusters.
- Sand Rails & Dune Buggies: The industry standard for chassis-mounted gauge pods where vibration resistance is critical.
- VW Thing (Type 181): A rugged addition for modified trekking vehicles with auxiliary cooling requirements.
- Meyers Manx & Kit Cars: Provides a professional, race-ready look for any custom fiberglass body build.

PRO TIPS
1. Respect the Capillary Tube
Unlike electrical gauges that use thin wires, a mechanical temperature gauge uses a copper capillary tube filled with a volatile liquid. NEVER kink, sharp-bend, or cut this tube. If the tube is severed, the gauge is permanently ruined and cannot be repaired. When routing the line from your engine block to the dash, use wide, sweeping loops and always use a rubber grommet when passing through the firewall to prevent vibration from chafing the line. If you have excess tubing, coil it loosely in a safe area away from moving parts or extreme exhaust heat.
2. Seal the Threads Properly
When installing the temperature probe into your water manifold or thermostat housing, ensure you are using the correct adapter. The ATM4432 usually comes with a 1/2 inch NPT adapter. Use a small amount of Teflon tape or thread sealant on the NPT threads that go into the engine, but be extremely careful not to get any sealant on the bulb of the sensor itself. The bulb needs direct contact with the coolant flow to provide an accurate reading. Ensure the compression nut on the capillary line is snug but not over-tightened, as the seal is created by the seating of the bulb, not the tightness of the nut.
3. Optimize Visibility with the 2-5/8 Inch Format
If you are building a custom dash for a sand rail or a baja bug, the 2-5/8 inch gauge is your best friend. Because of the larger sweep area, you can calibrate your peripheral vision to know exactly where the needle should be during normal operation. Pro tip: Rotate the gauge in its mounting hole so that your ''''normal'''' operating temperature (usually around 180-190 degrees) results in the needle pointing straight up. This way, any deviation from the vertical position is instantly noticeable without you having to actually read the numbers while bouncing through the whoops.
