OVERVIEW
Monitoring your transmission temperature is not just a luxury; it is a necessity for any serious air-cooled enthusiast pushing their machine to the limit. Whether you are navigating a heavy Type 2 Westfalia through mountain passes or launching a high-stall street-strip Beetle, heat is the ultimate enemy of your transaxle''s longevity. The AutoMeter 2-5/8 Inch Ultra-Lite Transmission Temperature Gauge (ATM4457) provides the precision and immediate feedback required to prevent catastrophic fluid breakdown. Built with a rugged air-core meter movement, this gauge is designed to withstand the high-vibration environment of a Volkswagen engine bay while maintaining dead-on accuracy. The Ultra-Lite series is a legend in the racing world, featuring a signature silver face and brushed aluminum bezel that perfectly complements the performance-oriented cockpit of a custom Bug or a rugged Sand Rail.
One of the primary advantages of the ATM4457 is its electric operation. Unlike mechanical gauges that require a stiff, fragile capillary tube to be routed from the transaxle to the dashboard, this electric unit utilizes a simple wire lead. This makes installation through the tight chassis tunnels of a vintage VW significantly easier and safer. The gauge includes a high-quality 1/8 inch NPT temperature sender and the necessary mounting hardware to get you up and running quickly. By providing a clear 100 to 250 degree Fahrenheit sweep, you can identify rising temperatures long before the smell of burnt gear oil reaches the cabin. At Appletree Auto, we know that protecting your drivetrain investment is a top priority, and there is no better way to do it than with the trusted reliability of AutoMeter''s American-made instrumentation.
FITMENT
While this is a universal high-performance gauge, it is ideally suited for the following Volkswagen and off-road applications:
- Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle: 1946-1979 (All models, especially those with Auto-Stick or heavy-duty transaxles).
- Volkswagen Type 2 Bus / Transporter: 1950-1979 (Crucial for 002 and 091 automatic or manual gearboxes).
- Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1961-1973 (Essential for automatic models).
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1955-1974.
- Volkswagen Type 181 Thing: 1973-1975.
- Custom Sand Rails and Dune Buggies: All years and configurations using VW-based transaxles.
- Meyers Manx and Kit Cars: Perfect for fiberglass bodies where dashboard space allows for the larger 2-5/8 inch diameter.

PRO TIPS
1. Optimize Your Sender Placement
For the most accurate reading on your air-cooled VW, we recommend installing the temperature sender in the transmission oil pan or the lowest point of the gear housing where the fluid is most concentrated. If you are running an external oil cooler for your transaxle, installing the sender in the "hot" line leading from the transmission to the cooler will give you the most immediate warning of temperature spikes. Always use a small amount of thread sealant or Teflon tape on the sender threads, but ensure that the sender can still achieve a solid electrical ground through the threads to the transmission case, as electric gauges rely on a completed circuit to function correctly.
2. Master the Wiring for Longevity
When routing the signal wire from your transaxle to the dashboard, avoid running it alongside high-voltage ignition components like spark plug wires or the coil. This prevents "electrical noise" from interfering with the gauge reading. Because VWs are prone to vibration, always use rubber grommets when passing wires through the firewall or chassis to prevent the insulation from chafing against sharp metal edges. Secure the wiring with zip ties every 12 inches to ensure nothing sags and touches the hot exhaust system, which is a common point of failure in rear-engine setups.
3. Account for the 2-5/8 Inch Diameter
The 2-5/8 inch diameter is larger than the standard 2-1/16 inch gauge found in most automotive applications. This "Monster" size is fantastic for visibility during high-speed off-road racing or spirited street driving, but it requires careful planning for your dashboard layout. If you are mounting this in a stock Beetle dashboard, you may need a dedicated under-dash pod or a custom mounting panel. Ensure you have at least 3 inches of clearance behind the mounting surface to account for the depth of the gauge body and the wiring connections. The larger face makes it much easier to read at a glance without taking your eyes off the road or the trail for too long.
