PRO TIPS

1. Upgrade to Copper or Braided Lines

While the included 10-foot nylon tubing is functional for many basic setups, we highly recommend upgrading to a copper line kit or a braided stainless steel -3AN line for any high-performance or off-road VW. Air-cooled engines often run hotter than their water-cooled counterparts, and a mechanical gauge brings live oil directly into the cabin. A copper or braided line offers significantly higher resistance to heat and physical abrasion, preventing the nightmare of a melted nylon line spraying hot oil onto your interior or your feet while driving. If you do stick with nylon, ensure it is routed far away from the exhaust manifold or heater boxes.

2. Use a Firewall Grommet and Heat Shielding

When routing the oil pressure line from your engine''s oil pressure relief gallery or oil pump through the firewall, never run the line through a bare metal hole. The vibration of a flat-four engine can cause the metal edge to saw through the line over time. Always use a high-quality rubber grommet. Additionally, in the engine bay of a Beetle or Bus, the line often passes near the cylinder heads. We suggest wrapping the section of the line nearest the engine in a fire-reflective heat sleeve to ensure the oil temperature inside the line doesn''t affect the integrity of the pressure signal or the line itself.

3. Proper Bleeding and Sealing

For the most accurate and responsive needle movement, try to avoid large loops in the pressure line where air bubbles can become trapped, though a small coil near the engine can help absorb vibration. When installing the NPT fittings into your engine block or oil pump, use a small amount of Teflon tape or thread sealant on the male threads, but be extremely careful not to let any sealant enter the orifice of the fitting. Even a tiny fragment of tape can clog the gauge''s internal Bourdon tube or interfere with your engine''s oil flow. Remember that NPT threads are tapered; don''t over-tighten them into your aluminum engine case, or you risk cracking the galley port.
