        OVERVIEW

When you are pushing the limits of your air-cooled powerplant, whether it is a draw-through turbo Beetle or a fuel-injected sand rail, monitoring your manifold pressure is not just a luxuryit is a necessity for engine survival. The AutoMeter 2-5/8 Inch Ultra-Lite Vacuum/Boost Gauge (ATM4428) is the industry standard for high-performance monitoring, offering a perfect blend of lightweight construction and unmatched visibility. This gauge features a stunning satin anodized aluminum bezel and a silver dial face that has become iconic in the Volkswagen drag racing and off-road communities. The larger 2-5/8 inch diameter provides a significantly larger viewing area compared to standard gauges, making it much easier to monitor your boost levels at a glance while you are rowing through the gears or navigating a technical dune section. It is designed to withstand the harsh vibrations and rigors of a high-performance environment, ensuring that your readings remain steady and accurate when it matters most.

This mechanical boost gauge operates with a traditional bourdon tube movement, providing the lightning-fast response time that professional racers demand. It tracks vacuum from 0 to 30 In. Hg and boost pressure from 0 to 20 PSI, making it the ideal choice for street-performance turbos and moderately boosted competition engines. The Ultra-Lite series was specifically engineered to reduce weight, utilizing aluminum components where others use heavier metals, which is a critical advantage for weight-conscious builders. Each unit comes complete with a 10-foot nylon tubing kit, 1/8 inch NPT fittings, and the necessary mounting hardware to get your cockpit dialed in. When you choose AutoMeter, you are investing in decades of American-made racing heritage that ensures your air-cooled VW remains in the sweet spot of its power band without the risk of over-boosting and catastrophic engine failure.

        FITMENT

This gauge is a universal high-performance instrument. While it can be adapted to almost any vehicle with a 12V electrical system for lighting, it is most commonly installed in the following air-cooled Volkswagen applications:

        • Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle: 1946 through 1979 (All Turbocharged/Supercharged models).
        • Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1955 through 1974.
        • Volkswagen Type 2 Bus / Transporter / Kombi: 1950 through 1979.
        • Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1961 through 1973.
        • Volkswagen Type 181 Thing: 1973 through 1975.
        • Custom Sand Rails and Dune Buggies: All years utilizing forced induction.
        • Meyers Manx and Fiberglass Buggies: All years.
        • Note: Requires a 2-5/8 inch (66.7mm) mounting hole or a dedicated gauge pod for installation.

        PRO TIPS

Tip 1: Optimal Tubing Routing for Accurate Response

When installing your mechanical boost gauge, the routing of the nylon tubing is just as important as the gauge itself. You should always avoid sharp kinks or placing the line near high-heat sources like your exhaust headers or the turbo housing. Heat can soften the nylon line, leading to a collapse or a leak, which will result in inaccurate readings or a total loss of signal. For the most accurate manifold pressure reading, we recommend tapping your vacuum source directly into the intake manifold plenum, after the throttle body. This ensures you are seeing exactly what the cylinders are seeing, including the vacuum transition when you lift off the throttle.

Tip 2: Upgrading to Copper Line for High-Heat Environments

While the included nylon tubing is excellent for most street applications, many air-cooled VW specialists prefer to upgrade to a copper tubing kit if the line must pass through the tight, hot confines of a Type 1 engine tin or near a turbocharger. Copper line is much more resistant to melting and vibration-induced fatigue. If you stick with the nylon, ensure you use a rubber grommet whenever the line passes through the firewall or engine tin to prevent the metal edges from sawing through the plastic over time. A small leak in this line won''t just mess up your gauge reading; it can also cause a vacuum leak that disrupts your engine''s idle and tuning.

Tip 3: Dialing in the Nighttime Visibility

The AutoMeter Ultra-Lite series uses perimeter incandescent lighting, which provides a classic look that is easy on the eyes during night driving. The kit includes both red and green bulb covers (boots). For a vintage VW look that matches the original VDO dashboard lighting, the green boot is a popular choice. However, if you are building a modern race-spec cockpit, the red boot is often preferred as it preserves your night vision. Always ensure your ground wire for the lighting circuit is secured to a clean, paint-free chassis point to prevent flickering, especially in older Volkswagens where the factory wiring may be degraded or brittle.
