        OVERVIEW

In the world of high-performance air-cooled Volkswagen engines, maintaining precise oil pressure is not just a luxuryit is the lifeline of your powerplant. The AutoMeter 2-5/8 inch Silver Liquid Filled Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge (ATM4622) is engineered to withstand the brutal environments of off-road racing, sand dunes, and high-revving street performance. Unlike standard dry gauges, this liquid-filled unit utilizes a specialized fluid to dampen internal movement, effectively neutralizing the needle vibration often caused by the high-frequency harmonics of a flat-four VW engine. Whether you are bouncing through a wash in a Baja Bug or launching a drag car off the line, the steady, rock-solid reading provided by this gauge ensures you have the accurate data needed to protect your investment. The 0 to 200 PSI range is specifically advantageous for high-pressure systems, providing ample headroom for cold-start pressure spikes and high-volume oil pumps common in performance builds.

Aesthetics and durability go hand-in-hand with this Ultra-Lite series instrument. Featuring a stunning brushed aluminum dial and a matching silver anodized bezel, it provides a clean, professional look that complements both vintage interiors and modern race cockpits. The mechanical design means it operates independently of your vehicle''s electrical system for the pressure reading itself, offering a level of reliability that electronic sensors sometimes struggle to match in harsh, dusty, or moisture-heavy environments. This kit is truly comprehensive, arriving with 10 feet of nylon tubing and the necessary NPT fittings to get your installation started immediately. When you choose AutoMeter, you are not just buying a gauge; you are installing a legacy of American-made precision that has been the industry standard for decades. Trust your VW''s engine health to the best in the business and never guess about your oil pressure again.

        FITMENT

This universal mechanical gauge is a staple for custom dashboard layouts and center consoles. It is particularly popular for the following Volkswagen and off-road applications:

        • Volkswagen Beetle: All years and models (Standard and Super Beetle).
        • Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1955-1974.
        • Volkswagen Bus / Type 2: 1950-1979 (Split Window and Bay Window).
        • Volkswagen Type 3: Squareback, Fastback, and Notchback.
        • Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): All years.
        • Custom Off-Road: Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, Baja Bugs, and Manx-style buggies.
        • Performance Engines: Ideal for 1776cc, 1914cc, 2110cc, 2275cc, and larger stroker engines.

        PRO TIPS

        1. Proper Line Routing and Protection

When installing the 10-foot nylon line in your VW, always ensure it is routed away from high-heat sources like the exhaust extractor or the heater boxes. In an air-cooled engine, the engine bay temperatures can easily melt a nylon line, leading to a massive oil leak and potential engine failure. Use rubber grommets whenever the line passes through the firewall or the front tin-ware to prevent vibration from chafing the line. If you are building a dedicated race car or an extreme off-road rail, we highly recommend upgrading to a stainless steel braided line for the ultimate in puncture and heat resistance, although the provided nylon line is excellent for most street and light-duty applications.

        2. Managing the Liquid Filling Bubble

You may notice a small air bubble inside the gauge face; this is perfectly normal and intentional. The air bubble allows for the expansion and contraction of the dampening fluid during temperature changes. When mounting the gauge, try to position it so the bubble stays at the top of the dial face so it does not obscure the needle at your most critical pressure ranges (usually 20 to 60 PSI). If you live in an area with extreme altitude changes, you can briefly "vent" the gauge by carefully lifting the rubber plug on the top of the gauge body to equalize the internal pressure with the atmosphere, ensuring the most accurate needle movement possible.

        3. Avoiding Interference at the Oil Pressure Switch Port

On a standard VW Type 1 engine case, the oil pressure sender port is located near the distributor. When installing the NPT fittings for a mechanical gauge, space can get tight. We recommend using a "T-Fitting" if you intend to keep your stock "idiot light" functional. However, be extremely careful not to over-torque the fittings into the magnesium or aluminum engine case, as it is very easy to crack the casting. Use a high-quality thread sealantbut never Teflon tapeto ensure a leak-free seal. Teflon tape can shred and send small plastic bits into your oil galleries, potentially clogging a bearing surface. A liquid thread sealer is the professional choice for any VW engine build.
