        OVERVIEW

When you are pushing your air-cooled Volkswagen to the limit, whether it is a high-revving street car or a rugged off-road sand rail, monitoring your oil pressure is not just a suggestionit is a survival requirement. The AutoMeter 2-5/8 Inch Silver Liquid-Filled Oil Pressure Gauge (ATM4621) is engineered specifically for environments where vibration and harsh conditions would make a standard gauge needle bounce uncontrollably. By utilizing a specialized liquid silicone filling, this gauge dampens internal movement, providing a rock-steady reading even when you are hammering through the gears or bouncing over dunes. This level of precision allows you to spot minute fluctuations in pressure that could signal a failing oil pump or a thinning lubricant before catastrophic engine damage occurs. Don''t trust your expensive engine build to a generic "idiot light" when you can have the professional-grade accuracy that AutoMeter is world-renowned for.

The Silver series aesthetic provides a clean, high-performance look that complements both vintage and modern VW interiors. At 2-5/8 inches, this gauge is larger than the standard 2-1/16 inch variety, offering superior visibility at a glance so you can keep your eyes on the road or the trail. The mechanical Bourdon tube movement ensures that you are getting a direct, real-time pressure reading without the lag or electrical interference sometimes found in electronic senders. This gauge is housed in a rugged case with a stainless steel bezel, ensuring that it can withstand the heat and humidity common in tight VW engine compartments or open-air buggy cockpits. When you install an AutoMeter ATM4621, you are not just adding a tool; you are adding peace of mind and a piece of American-made racing heritage to your dashboard.

        FITMENT

This gauge is a universal mechanical fitment, but it is the preferred choice for the following air-cooled Volkswagen and custom applications:

        • Volkswagen Beetle (Type 1): 1946-1979 (All models including Standard and Super Beetle)
        • Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1955-1974
        • Volkswagen Bus / Transporter / Kombi (Type 2): 1950-1979 (Split Window and Bay Window)
        • Volkswagen Type 3 (Fastback, Squareback, Notchback): 1961-1973
        • Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): 1973-1975
        • Custom VW Applications: Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, Baja Bugs, and Manx-style bodies using Type 1 or Type 4 engines.
        • Performance Engines: Compatible with all 1600cc, 1776cc, 1835cc, 1914cc, 2110cc, and 2332cc stroker builds.

        PRO TIPS

        1. Use Copper or Braided Lines for Installation

Because this is a mechanical gauge, you must run an oil line from the engine block directly to the back of the gauge. While many kits come with cheap plastic nylon tubing, we strongly recommend upgrading to a copper line kit or, better yet, a -3AN stainless steel braided line. Plastic lines can become brittle over time due to the high heat of an air-cooled engine and may melt or snap, spraying hot oil inside your cabin. A braided line provides the ultimate security and a leak-free seal that matches the quality of your AutoMeter gauge.

        2. Adapting to the VW Case Threads

Most Volkswagen engine cases are tapped for an M10x1.0 thread for the original oil pressure switch. The AutoMeter ATM4621 uses a 1/8 inch NPT fitting. To make this work properly, you will need a brass adapter (M10x1.0 Male to 1/8" NPT Female). If you want to keep your factory dash "idiot light" functional alongside the gauge, use a "VDO Style" T-fitting adapter. This allows you to screw both the original pressure switch and the new AutoMeter line into the same port on the engine case behind the distributor.

        3. Managing the Liquid Fill Plug

You may notice a small rubber plug on the top of the gauge housing. This is used to seal the liquid silicone inside. After installation and once the vehicle has reached operating temperature, it is a pro-level move to briefly "vent" the gauge by pulling the edge of the plug up slightly to equalize the internal pressure with the atmospheric pressure. This ensures the needle returns perfectly to zero when the engine is off. Just be sure to do this with the gauge upright so you don''t spill any of the dampening fluid!
