        OVERVIEW

When you''re pushing the limits of a high-performance air-cooled engine, precision isn''t just a luxuryit''s a necessity for survival. The AutoMeter 2-5/8 Inch Silver Liquid Filled Fuel Pressure Gauge (ATM4612) is engineered for the serious VW enthusiast who demands absolute accuracy amidst the high-vibration environment of a dual-carbureted Beetle, a turbocharged Sand Rail, or a high-revving Baja Bug. This mechanical gauge features a liquid-filled design that effectively dampens needle sweep, preventing the "flutter" often seen in standard mechanical gauges when subjected to engine harmonics or rough off-road terrain. The brushed aluminum silver dial, coupled with a matching silver anodized bezel, provides a sleek, modern aesthetic that complements any high-end dashboard or cowl-mount setup, ensuring that your vital engine data is as sharp as your vehicle''s appearance.

Safety and reliability are at the forefront of this professional-grade instrument. Designed to monitor fuel pressure from 0 to 100 PSI, this gauge provides the critical feedback needed to prevent lean conditions that can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Because this is a mechanical gauge that brings fuel directly to the back of the instrument, it is strictly designed for exterior mounting, such as on a cowl or an external gauge pod. This prevents fuel lines from entering the passenger compartment, adhering to the highest safety standards for racing and street-performance applications. Whether you are tuning a sophisticated fuel injection system or monitoring a high-volume electric fuel pump on a racing Type 1 engine, the AutoMeter ATM4612 delivers the rugged durability and NIST-standard accuracy that has made AutoMeter a legend at the drag strip and in the dunes.

        FITMENT

This is a universal high-performance gauge commonly utilized in the following Volkswagen and off-road applications:

        • Volkswagen Beetle: 1950 through 1979 (All models)
        • Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1956 through 1974
        • Volkswagen Bus / Transporter: 1950 through 1979
        • Volkswagen Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback): 1962 through 1973
        • Volkswagen Thing: 1973 through 1974
        • Custom Off-Road: Sand Rails, Dune Buggies, Manx-style bodies, and Baja Bugs
        • Racing Applications: NHRA, SCORE, and SCTA sanctioned air-cooled classes

        SPECS

The following technical specifications ensure that the AutoMeter ATM4612 meets the rigorous demands of your air-cooled powerplant:

        • Pressure Range: 0 to 100 PSI
        • Gauge Type: Liquid Filled Mechanical
        • Face Finish: Brushed Aluminum Silver Dial
        • Bezel Finish: Silver Anodized Aluminum
        • Pointer Color: High-Contrast Orange for rapid visibility
        • Fill Fluid: Specialized liquid damping for vibration resistance
        • Fitting Requirement: Requires #4 AN Braided Stainless Steel Hose (sold separately)
        • Mounting Requirement: Requires an external mounting cup or cowl mount (sold separately)
        • Illumination: Designed for external daylight visibility; typically used without internal lighting for exterior mounts

        PRO TIPS

        1. Prioritize Safety with Exterior Mounting

Because the ATM4612 is a mechanical fuel pressure gauge, the fuel line connects directly to the back of the gauge. Never mount this gauge inside the cabin of your VW. In the event of a line failure or a leak, fuel would be sprayed directly into the passenger compartment, creating an extreme fire hazard. Always mount this gauge in an external pod on the cowl or the hood. If you must have fuel pressure readings inside the cabin, you should look into an electric gauge with a sending unit, but for pure mechanical accuracy and vibration damping on a race-ready Buggy, the exterior-mounted liquid-filled gauge is the professional choice.

        2. Use Only High-Quality Braided Lines

Don''t compromise your fuel system by using standard rubber hoses or plastic tubing for a 100 PSI gauge. We strongly recommend using #4 AN braided stainless steel lines with the appropriate adapter fittings. Braided lines offer the burst strength and abrasion resistance necessary for an exposed gauge mount. Ensure that the lines are routed away from heat sources like exhaust headers and are secured with cushioned P-clamps to prevent chafing against the chassis or bodywork during high-vibration off-road maneuvers.

        3. Understanding the Liquid Fill Bubble

You may notice a small air bubble inside the gauge face; this is completely normal and intentional. The bubble allows for the expansion and contraction of the damping liquid as temperatures change. If the gauge was filled 100% with no air gap, the pressure increase from heat could cause the seals to leak or the lens to crack. When mounting the gauge, try to position it so the bubble is at the top (12 o''clock position) to ensure it doesn''t obscure the needle at your most critical pressure readings. This liquid damping is what allows the needle to stay rock-steady even when your engine is bouncing off the rev limiter.
