Tip 1: Upgrade to Copper Tubing for Longevity

While the included 10-foot nylon tubing is functional for many applications, we highly recommend upgrading to a copper line kit for air-cooled VWs. The heat generated by the engine, especially near the cylinder heads and exhaust, can eventually make nylon lines brittle or prone to melting if they aren''t routed perfectly. Copper lines offer superior heat resistance and are much less likely to develop a leak over time, providing peace of mind that your oil stays inside the engine and out of your interior.

Tip 2: Use the Correct Case Adapter

Standard VW engine cases are usually tapped for a M10x1.0 metric thread for the oil pressure light sending unit. Since this AutoMeter gauge uses 1/8 inch NPT fittings, you will need a metric-to-NPT adapter or a "VDO-style" T-fitting to run both your dash warning light and this mechanical gauge simultaneously. Never force an NPT fitting into a metric hole, as it will strip the soft magnesium or aluminum case threads. Always use a small amount of thread sealant on the NPT side, but avoid getting it inside the line where it could clog the gauge or engine galleries.

Tip 3: Routing and Bleeding the Line

When routing your oil line from the engine to the dash, ensure there are no sharp kinks or areas where the line can rub against the chassis. Use rubber grommets whenever passing through the firewall or tinware to prevent vibration-induced leaks. To get the most accurate and steady reading, it is helpful to have a "vertical" run where possible to help air bubbles find their way out, though mechanical gauges are generally self-bleeding. After installation, start the engine and check both the back of the gauge and the engine block connection for any signs of weeping before you head out for a drive.
