OVERVIEW
Precision fuel management is the lifeblood of any high-performance air-cooled Volkswagen, and the AutoMeter 2-1/16 Ultra-Lite Fuel Pressure Gauge (ATM4311) is the gold standard for monitoring your engine''s vitals. When you are running a tuned dual-carburetor setup, such as Weber IDFs or Dellorto DRLAs, even a slight fluctuation in fuel pressure can lead to erratic idling, float bowl flooding, or dangerous lean conditions at wide-open throttle. This mechanical gauge provides a lightning-fast, real-time reading of your fuel system''s status, allowing you to dial in your fuel pressure regulator with absolute confidence. The Ultra-Lite series features an iconic silver face, black increments, and a high-visibility fluorescent red pointer, wrapped in a lightweight brushed aluminum bezel that perfectly complements the vintage-meets-modern aesthetic of a custom VW dash or a rugged dune buggy cockpit.
Engineered for durability in the harshest environments, from the vibrating chassis of a Baja Bug to the high-heat engine bays of a Type 2 Transporter, this 0-15 PSI gauge is specifically calibrated for carbureted applications. Unlike universal gauges that offer too wide a range, the 15 PSI sweep provides the granular detail you need when every half-pound of pressure counts. As an air-cooled specialist, I have seen far too many "mystery" engine stumbles that were simply the result of a failing mechanical pump or a clogged fuel filter; having this gauge mounted in your line of sight eliminates the guesswork. Whether you are cruising the coastline in a Karmann Ghia or launching off a dune in a sandrail, the AutoMeter Ultra-Lite series delivers the professional-grade accuracy required to protect your investment and maximize your Volkswagen''s horsepower potential.
FITMENT
This gauge is a universal 2-1/16 inch (52.4mm) instrument designed to fit most aftermarket gauge pods, radio block-off plates, and custom dashboards. It is specifically recommended for the following air-cooled applications using carbureted fuel systems:
- Volkswagen Beetle: 1950 through 1977 (Standard and Super Beetle)
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1955 through 1974
- Volkswagen Type 2 Bus / Transporter: 1950 through 1979 (Split Window and Bay Window)
- Volkswagen Type 3: 1961 through 1973 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback)
- Volkswagen Thing (Type 181): 1973 through 1974
- Dune Buggies & Sandrails: All custom chassis (Meyers Manx, Berrien, Chenowth, etc.)
- VW-Based Kit Cars: Puma, Bradley GT, Fiberfab, and more.

PRO TIPS
Pro Tip 1: Prioritize Safety with Mechanical Gauges. Because this is a mechanical gauge, it requires a physical fuel line to be run to the back of the instrument. In the air-cooled VW world, we strongly recommend against running a raw fuel line into the passenger compartment. For a professional and safe installation, you should use an AutoMeter Fuel Pressure Isolator. This device mounts in the engine bay and uses a non-flammable fluid (usually glycol) to transmit the pressure reading to the gauge via a separate line, keeping highly flammable gasoline far away from your lap and the electrical wiring behind your dash.
Pro Tip 2: Use the Right Sealant for NPT Fittings. When connecting your 1/8 inch NPT fuel line or isolator line to the back of the gauge, never use standard plumbing Teflon tape, which can shred and clog the tiny orifice of the gauge or your carburetor needles. Instead, use a high-quality fuel-resistant thread sealant paste or specialized yellow gas-rated PTFE tape. Apply it sparingly to the male threads only, ensuring the first two threads are left bare to prevent any sealant from entering the gauge mechanism and locking up the needle.
Pro Tip 3: Calibrate for Your Carbs. Most stock VW mechanical pumps put out between 2.5 and 4 PSI, but performance pumps can spike much higher. If you are running Weber or Dellorto carburetors, they generally prefer a steady 3.0 to 3.5 PSI. Use this gauge in conjunction with a high-quality pressure regulator (like a Malpassi or Holley unit). While the engine is running, watch the gauge for "needle flutter." If the needle vibrates excessively, it is a sign of pump pulses or air in the line; installing a small fuel filter or a "T" junction before the gauge can often help dampen these pulses for a smoother, more accurate reading.
