PRO TIPS

1. Protect Your Vacuum Line from Engine Heat

When routing the included nylon vacuum line from your intake manifold back to the dashboard, always avoid contact with the exhaust system or the cylinder heads. Air-cooled engines run significantly hotter than water-cooled counterparts, and a melted vacuum line will result in a "zero" reading on your gauge or, worse, a massive vacuum leak that causes your engine to run lean. I highly recommend sliding a length of 1/8 inch fuel hose or heat-shrink tubing over the nylon line in the engine bay to act as a heat shield and prevent abrasions where the line passes through the tinware.

2. Use a Dedicated Manifold Source

For the most accurate boost and vacuum readings, ensure your T-fitting is tapped into a dedicated source on the intake manifold, ideally after the throttle body. Avoid "sharing" a vacuum line with high-draw components like a vacuum-advance distributor if possible, as this can lead to slight needle flutter. If you experience excessive needle vibration or "buzzing" during rapid acceleration, you can install a small inline restrictor or a "snubber" in the vacuum line to dampen the pulses without sacrificing the response time of the gauge.

3. Perfect the Seal at the Gauge Back

The 1/8 inch NPT fitting on the back of the AutoMeter gauge requires a precise seal to prevent interior leaks. When installing the compression fitting onto the back of the gauge, use a small amount of Teflon tape or thread sealant on the NPT threads, but be extremely careful not to get any sealant inside the gauge orifice. Hand-tighten the compression nut first, then use a wrench to turn it an additional 1-1/4 turns. Do not over-tighten, as you can crack the brass fitting or the nylon line, leading to an annoying "hissing" sound inside your cabin whenever you are under boost.
