        OVERVIEW

When it comes to monitoring the vital signs of your high-performance engine, the AutoMeter Sport-Comp Series Mechanical Water Temperature Gauge stands as the industry standard for precision and rugged reliability. Engineered for the serious racer and the meticulous VW enthusiast alike, this 2-1/16-inch gauge features the iconic Sport-Comp aesthetica sleek black face, bold white increments, and a high-visibility fluorescent red needle. Whether you are running a radical Subaru-powered sand rail, a water-cooled Vanagon, or a custom street-strip Beetle with a radiator-cooled setup, this gauge provides the real-time data you need to prevent catastrophic engine failure. It doesn''t rely on electrical signals or sensors that can fail due to ground loops or voltage drops; instead, it utilizes a heavy-duty Bourdon tube movement for unmatched accuracy in the harshest environments.

The mechanical nature of the ATM3333 makes it a favorite among off-roaders and professional engine builders who demand a direct physical connection to the cooling system. This kit comes complete with a 12-foot capillary tube, ensuring you have plenty of length to route from a rear-engine Volkswagen setup to a front-mounted dashboard. The gauge covers a critical temperature range from 120 to 240 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing you to monitor warm-up cycles and detect overheating long before the factory "idiot light" would ever glow. With its perimeter incandescent lighting, visibility remains crystal clear during night-time desert runs or late-evening cruises. When you install an AutoMeter gauge from Appletree Auto, you aren''t just adding a dial to your dash; you are installing decades of American-made racing heritage and peace of mind.

        FITMENT

This gauge is a universal 2-1/16-inch (52.4mm) instrument designed to fit standard gauge pods, dash cutouts, and mounting brackets. It is specifically recommended for the following Volkswagen and custom applications:

        • VW Vanagon (T3): 1983-1991 Waterboxer models and diesel variants.
        • VW Bus/Transporter: Custom engine conversions (Subaru, Mazda Rotary, or Ford EcoTec swaps).
        • Dune Buggies & Sand Rails: Any chassis utilizing a radiator-cooled engine configuration.
        • VW Rabbit, Jetta, & Scirocco: 1975-1984 Water-cooled A1 chassis models.
        • VW Type 1 Beetle & Ghia: High-performance builds featuring water-cooled cylinder head conversions.
        • Universal: Any vehicle with a 1/2-inch NPT coolant port or compatible adapter.

        PRO TIPS

        1. Protect the Capillary Tube at All Costs

The most critical aspect of installing a mechanical temperature gauge is the handling of the 12-foot capillary tube. This tube is filled with a specific gas or liquid that expands with heat to move the needle. You must NEVER kink, cut, or crimp this line. If the line is severed, the gauge is permanently ruined and cannot be repaired. When routing the line through your VW''s chassis or firewall, use a rubber grommet to prevent vibration from chafing the metal line. Always leave a small "service loop" of extra tubing near the engine to allow for movement and vibration without putting stress on the fitting.

        2. Ensure Proper Sealing and Grounding

While the gauge movement itself is mechanical, the internal light bulb requires a solid 12V power source and a clean ground. For the temperature probe installation, use a small amount of thread sealant on the 1/2-inch NPT adapter to prevent coolant leaks. However, be careful not to over-apply sealant to the point where it clogs the sensor bulb. If you are adapting this to a metric VW head (like a 1.8L or 2.0L swap), ensure you use the correct AutoMeter metric adapter (typically M10x1.0 or M14x1.5) to avoid stripping the threads in your aluminum water flange.

        3. Optimize Night-Time Visibility

The Sport-Comp series includes red and green bulb covers to allow you to customize the backlighting. For most vintage VW dashboards, the green cover provides a classic look that matches the factory speedometer illumination. If you find the incandescent bulb is too bright or too dim, you can wire the 12V lead into your factory headlight dimmer switch circuit. This allows you to adjust the gauge brightness along with the rest of your cockpit, preventing night-glare during long drives across the Mojave or through dark canyon roads.
