Tip 1: Handle the Capillary Tube with Care

The most critical aspect of installing a mechanical water temperature gauge is the handling of the capillary tube. This tube is filled with a specific ether gas or liquid that expands with heat to move the needle. You must never kink, sharp-bend, or cut this line. If the line is cut or broken, the gauge is permanently ruined and cannot be repaired. When routing the 6-foot line from your engine to the dashboard, use wide, sweeping loops and ensure it is protected from sharp metal edges using rubber grommets through the firewall. This ensures a lifetime of accurate service without the risk of leaks or failure.

Tip 2: Proper Sealing and Fitting Installation

When installing the temperature bulb into your engine block or radiator housing, always use the provided 1/2-inch NPT adapter if necessary. However, be extremely careful with thread sealant. While you should use a small amount of Teflon tape or thread sealer on the NPT threads of the adapter going into the engine, you should NOT use sealant on the flare nut that secures the capillary tube to the adapter.
