PRO TIPS

1. Master the Shim System for Perfect Tension

Unlike modern serpentine belt systems with automatic tensioners, the VW air-cooled system relies on shims placed between the two halves of the pulley. If your belt is too loose, remove shims from between the halves and place them on the outside of the outer pulley half (under the nut). If the belt is too tight, add shims between the halves. You should aim for about 1/2 inch of deflection in the belt when pressed firmly with your thumb. Never leave extra shims off the car; they must stay on the shaft (either inside or outside the pulley) to ensure the nut can be torqued down properly against the shoulder of the shaft.

2. Always Use the Correct Billet-Specific Hardware

One of the most common mistakes builders make is trying to reuse the stock thin-walled nut and wavy washer from a stamped steel pulley. 3. Verify Vertical Belt Alignment

Whenever you install a new top pulley, it is vital to check the alignment with your crankshaft pulley. Use a straight edge held against the face of the bottom pulley and extend it up toward the top pulley. If the belt is running at an angle, it will generate excessive heat, flip over at high RPM, or wear out the belt in a matter of miles. If the alignment is off, you may need to adjust the position of the alternator/generator in the stand or check if your alternator stand is seated correctly on the engine block. A perfectly aligned belt is the secret to a reliable cooling system and a long-lasting charging system.
