OVERVIEW
Elevate your engine bay''s aesthetic while maintaining peak cooling performance with the EMPI 36Hp Style Fan Shroud. This shroud is designed for the VW enthusiast who demands the vintage, low-profile look of the early 36hp engines but requires the superior cooling capacity of modern doghouse oil coolers. Built from heavy-gauge steel, this shroud offers a significant upgrade over flimsy alternatives, providing the structural integrity needed to withstand the vibrations and heat cycles of a high-performance air-cooled engine. The sleek gray powder-coated finish not only provides a custom, industrial look that complements any color scheme but also offers superior corrosion resistance compared to standard paint or chrome, ensuring your engine remains a showpiece for years to come.
The "No Ducts" design is specifically engineered for clean, simplified engine builds where heater boxes are not utilized. By eliminating the heater duct outlets, this shroud provides a streamlined appearance that is highly sought after in the dune buggy, rail, and custom street car communities. This configuration forces all available air directly over the cylinders and through the oil cooler, maximizing thermal efficiency in warm climates or racing applications. Designed to accommodate the wider "Doghouse" style fan and oil cooler, this shroud bridges the gap between classic 1950s styling and 1970s cooling technology, making it the premier choice for 1300cc to 2332cc upright engine builds that prioritize both form and function.

PRO TIPS
1. Proper Alignment and the Spacer Kit
When installing a 36hp style shroud on a modern 1600cc based case, you may encounter slight alignment variances with the cylinder tin. We highly recommend using the Shroud Spacer Kit (Part # 4552-51) during installation. These spacers allow you to "fine-tune" the height and angle of the shroud, ensuring a tight seal against the engine tin. A tight seal is critical; any air that escapes before passing through the cylinder fins or the oil cooler is lost cooling potential. Before tightening your mounting bolts, ensure the fan is perfectly centered in the shroud opening to prevent the fan blades from contacting the housing at high RPMs.
2. Managing Airflow Without Ducts
Since this shroud features the "No Ducts" design, it is intended for engines that do not use fresh air heater boxes. If you are converting from a standard dual-duct shroud, ensure you are also using block-off plates on your lower engine tin or running J-Tubes instead of heater boxes. Because there are no heater outlets to "bleed off" pressure, the air pressure inside this shroud is higher than a standard unit. Always verify that the internal vanes are correctly positioned (if applicable) to distribute air evenly between the 1/2 and 3/4 sides of the engine, as the 3/4 side typically runs hotter due to the oil cooler placement.
3. Powder Coat Maintenance and Grounding
The gray powder coat is exceptionally durable, but like all performance parts, it requires specific care. When cleaning, avoid harsh chemical degreasers that can dull the finish; a simple mild soap and water solution is best. Additionally, remember that powder coating acts as an insulator. If you are using the fan shroud as a grounding point for any electrical components or if your coil is mounted directly to the shroud, you must scrape away a small amount of the coating at the bolt holes to ensure a clean metal-to-metal contact. Failure to do so can lead to intermittent ignition issues or charging system failures.
