        OVERVIEW

When you are pushing a high-performance air-cooled engine to its limits, whether it is in a radical street Beetle or a heavy-duty sand rail, monitoring your oil pressure is not just a suggestionit is a survival necessity. The AutoMeter 2-5/8 inch Pro-Comp Liquid Filled Oil Pressure Gauge (ATM5457) is the gold standard for enthusiasts who demand absolute precision under the most grueling conditions. Unlike standard dry gauges that suffer from "needle bounce" or "flutter" caused by the intense vibrations of a flat-four engine and rough terrain, this Pro-Comp series gauge utilizes a liquid-filled design. The internal glycerin dampens the movement of the needle, providing a rock-steady reading even when you are pinned at wide-open throttle or bouncing through a wash. This ensures that you can accurately track your engine''s health at a glance, allowing you to catch potential oil starvation or pump failure before it leads to a catastrophic engine meltdown.

The Pro-Comp series is engineered with a ruggedness that matches the spirit of the air-cooled community. Featuring a classic black face, high-contrast white numbering, and a signature silver bezel, this gauge offers a professional, race-ready aesthetic that looks right at home in a custom aluminum dash or a fiberglass buggy pod. The 2-5/8 inch diameter is the preferred choice for racers and off-roaders because it provides significantly better visibility than the smaller 2-1/16 inch variants, making it much easier to read in your peripheral vision while your eyes are focused on the track or the trail. Every ATM5457 is built with AutoMeter''s legendary mechanical movements, ensuring that you have a direct, hardware-based connection to your engine''s oiling system that does not rely on complex electronics or sensors that can fail in high-heat environments. When you install an AutoMeter Pro-Comp gauge, you are not just adding a dial to your dash; you are installing peace of mind backed by decades of American racing heritage.

        FITMENT

This gauge is a universal high-performance component and is compatible with the following Volkswagen and off-road applications (note: requires appropriate oil pressure line kit and case adapters):

        PRO TIPS

        1. Use a Copper Line Kit for Maximum Safety

While many mechanical gauges come with a nylon plastic tubing kit, we highly recommend upgrading to a copper line kit for your air-cooled VW. The engine compartment of a Volkswagen can reach extremely high temperatures, especially near the cylinder heads and exhaust. Nylon lines can become brittle over time or melt if they accidentally touch a hot surface, leading to a massive oil leak and potential engine fire. A copper line, properly flared and secured, provides a much more robust connection that can withstand the heat and vibration common in high-performance VW builds. Always ensure you use a grommet when passing the line through the firewall to prevent the metal edges from chafing the line.

        2. Proper Case Pressure Port Adaptation

To get the most accurate reading on your VW engine, you will typically tap into the oil pressure relief gallery or use a "T-fitting" at the stock oil pressure sending unit location (near the distributor). Because VW cases use a specific metric thread (usually M10x1.0), you must use a high-quality brass adapter to convert the case port to the 1/8 inch NPT required for the AutoMeter line. Avoid over-tightening these fittings into the magnesium or aluminum case, as it is very easy to strip the threads. Use a small amount of thread sealant (like Teflon tape or paste), but ensure it does not enter the oil passage where it could clog your engine''s internal oil gallies.

        3. Managing Liquid Expansion and Air Bubbles

The AutoMeter ATM5457 is liquid-filled to protect the internal mechanism from vibration, but you may notice a small air bubble at the top of the dial. This is completely normal and necessary; it allows the glycerin to expand and contract as temperatures change without blowing out the seals of the gauge. If you ever find that the needle is not returning to zero when the engine is off, it may be due to internal pressure buildup within the gauge case from altitude or temperature changes. Most liquid-filled gauges have a small rubber vent plug on the top; simply "burp" the gauge by momentarily lifting the edge of the plug to equalize the internal pressure with the atmosphere, then reseal it for a perfect zero-point reading.
