1. Proper Line Routing is Critical in Rear-Engine Layouts

Because the engine in a VW is located in the rear, you have a significantly longer run for your boost line than a front-engine vehicle. We highly recommend upgrading from the standard nylon tubing to a 1/8 inch copper line kit, especially for the portion of the run that passes through the engine bay. The intense heat of a turbocharged air-cooled engine can soften or even melt nylon lines, leading to inaccurate readings or boost leaks. If you do use the nylon line, ensure it is protected by heat-reflective sleeving and is secured every 12-18 inches to prevent vibration-induced fatigue. Never route the line near the exhaust manifold or any moving suspension components.

2. Seal Your Fittings Without Over-Tightening

When installing the 1/8 inch NPT adapter into your intake manifold or turbo housing, use a small amount of high-quality thread sealant or PTFE tape. However, be extremely careful not to over-tighten the compression fitting on the back of the gauge itself. The mechanical movement inside the AutoMeter Sport-Comp gauge is a precision instrument; excessive torque on the rear fitting can distort the internal Bourdon tube, leading to a gauge that doesn''t return to zero or provides "sticky" readings. Snug the fitting until it is airtight, then stop. If you find the needle is not resting exactly on the zero pin when the engine is off, check for any tension or "pull" being exerted on the gauge by the pressure line.

3. Wire Your Lighting for Maximum Visibility

To get the most out of the classic Sport-Comp aesthetic, wire the gauge lighting into your factory headlight switch or a dedicated dimmer circuit.
