OVERVIEW
When you''re pushing the limits of off-road performance in a long-travel sand rail or a rugged woods buggy, your drivetrain is the most vulnerable link in the chain. This EMPI 19-1/4 inch Axle Assembly with 930 CV Joints is engineered specifically to eliminate those weak points and provide the ultimate power transfer for high-angle suspension setups. Designed for enthusiasts running the popular combination of a Volkswagen Bus transaxle and 3x3 trailing arms, this kit offers the necessary length and articulation to handle extreme vertical travel without binding or snapping. The 930 CV joint, originally designed for the Porsche 930 Turbo, has become the industry gold standard for off-roaders due to its massive 108mm diameter and its ability to operate at much higher angles than standard Beetle or Bus joints. By utilizing these heavy-duty components, you''re ensuring that your vehicle can put the power to the ground even when the suspension is fully cycled.
This complete axle package from Appletree Automotive takes the guesswork out of building a high-performance rear end. We provide everything you need in one robust kit, including a pair of precision-machined 19-1/4 inch axles, four high-strength 930 CV joints, and all the necessary boots, grease, and Grade 12.9 hardware. The axles themselves are manufactured from high-tensile strength steel and feature rolled splines for superior durability compared to cheaper cut-spline alternatives. Whether you are building a fresh Baja Bug, a mid-engine sand car, or upgrading an existing dune buggy, this assembly provides the peace of mind that comes with professional-grade components. Don''t let a snapped axle or a seized CV joint end your weekend early; invest in a drivetrain that is built to withstand the brutal environment of off-road racing and recreational thrashing.

PRO TIPS
1. Mastering the CV Grease Procedure
The most common cause of premature 930 CV failure is improper lubrication during assembly. You cannot simply squeeze the grease packet into the boot and hope for the best. You must "pack" the CV joint much like you would a wheel bearing. Force the high-moly grease into the center of the joint, rotating the cage and balls to ensure every void is filled. A well-packed joint should have grease coming out of the opposite side. Additionally, avoid over-filling the boot itself; the grease inside the boot is for cooling and reserve, but if there is too much, the heat expansion can actually pop the boot off or cause it to tear at high RPMs.
2. The Critical "First Ride" Bolt Check
930 CV bolts are notorious for loosening up during their first few heat cycles. When installing your new assembly, ensure you use a "star pattern" when torquing the 12-point bolts to the manufacturer''s specification (typically 45-50 ft-lbs for 930 hardware). After your first 15 to 30 minutes of driving, you MUST go back under the car and re-torque every single bolt. We highly recommend using Schnorr safety washers or a small drop of blue thread locker to prevent backing out. If one bolt gets loose, it puts extra stress on the others, leading to a catastrophic failure of the CV flange or the transaxle drive flange.
3. Checking for Axle Plunge and Binding
Before you head out to the dunes, you must cycle your suspension through its full range of motion (full droop to full compression) without the coil-overs or shocks attached. At both extremes, you need to verify that the axle has "plunge"meaning it can still move slightly back and forth between the CV joints. If the axle bottoms out against the center of the CV at full compression or full droop, it will act like a jackhammer and destroy your transaxle bearings or snap the axle. If you find binding, you may need to adjust your limit straps or bump stops to keep the axle within its safe operating window.
