OVERVIEW
When you''re carving through the dunes or navigating technical trails, the last thing you want is "slop" in your steering wheel. The Latest Rage 11-Inch Thin Line Rack and Pinion is the ultimate upgrade for any air-cooled enthusiast looking to move beyond the limitations of a traditional steering box. Precision-engineered from high-quality billet aluminum, this rack and pinion unit offers a lightweight yet incredibly durable solution for off-road applications. The "Thin Line" design is specifically catered to tight chassis configurations, ensuring that you have maximum clearance without sacrificing the mechanical advantage required for high-speed maneuvers. By replacing your aging steering gear with this billet beauty, you are investing in a direct, tactile connection to the front tires that only a high-end rack can provide.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this 11-inch unit is built to withstand the brutal vibrations and impacts synonymous with sand rail and dune buggy environments. The body is CNC-machined to exacting tolerances, housing a smooth-operating internal gear set that minimizes friction and maximizes response. It features a standard 5/8 - 36 spline input shaft, making it compatible with a wide range of aftermarket steering columns and U-joints. Whether you are building a professional-grade sand rail from the ground up or refreshing a classic woods buggy, this Latest Rage rack and pinion provides the reliability and "point-and-shoot" steering accuracy that Appletree Auto customers demand. It''s not just a part; it''s a significant performance upgrade that transforms the entire driving dynamic of your Volkswagen-based off-road machine.
FITMENT
This rack and pinion is a universal-style off-road component frequently used in custom VW-based applications. While it is not a "bolt-on" for a stock Beetle frame head without modification, it is the industry standard for the following:
- Sand Rails & Tube Chassis: Ideal for Chenowth, Berrien, and custom chromoly frames.
- Dune Buggies: Perfect for Meyers Manx, EMPI Imp, and other fiberglass body buggies using a custom front beam.
- Baja Beetles: Often used in "Super Baja" builds where the stock steering box has been eliminated for long-travel setups.
- Woods Buggies: Heavy-duty construction holds up to trail debris and tight technical steering.
- Custom Projects: Any lightweight vehicle requiring a 5/8 - 36 spline steering input.

PRO TIPS
1. Master the Steering Geometry and Bump Steer
When installing an 11-inch rack on a VW-style front beam, the vertical placement of the rack is critical to eliminating "bump steer." Ideally, your tie rods should be on the same plane as your trailing arms. If the rack is mounted too high or too low, your wheels will "toe-in" or "toe-out" as the suspension travels up and down, causing the vehicle to dart unexpectedly. Always cycle your suspension from full compression to full extension without the shocks installed to ensure your toe setting remains consistent throughout the travel range.
2. U-Joint Phasing and Shaft Alignment
Since this unit uses a 5/8 - 36 spline shaft, you will likely be using universal joints to connect it to your steering column. It is imperative that you "phase" your U-joints correctly if you are using more than one. This means the yokes at both ends of the intermediate shaft must be aligned in the same plane. Improperly phased joints will cause a "binding" or "jerky" feel in the steering wheel as it rotates. Additionally, avoid extreme angles on your U-joints; try to keep them under 30 degrees to prevent premature wear and ensure a smooth steering effort.
3. Maintenance and Lubrication for Longevity
Even though this is a billet, high-performance unit, it is not "set it and forget it." Off-road environments are notorious for fine silt and sand that can find its way into moving parts. Periodically check the 3/8-inch heim joints (sold separately) that attach your tie rods to the rack for any play or grit. We recommend using a high-quality dry film lubricant on the external moving parts to prevent sand from sticking to the grease. Internally, ensure the rack remains properly lubricated according to the manufacturer''s intervals to prevent "notchy" steering and internal gear wear.
