OVERVIEW
Upgrade your vintage Volkswagen''s ride quality and handling performance with our premium IAP Front Ball Joint Gas-Filled Shock. Unlike traditional hydraulic oil-filled shocks that can suffer from aeration and "shock fade" during spirited driving or on rougher terrain, these gas-charged units utilize pressurized nitrogen to keep the internal valving consistent and responsive. By significantly reducing the foaming of the shock fluid, these shocks provide a much more stable dampening rate, ensuring that your Beetle or Karmann Ghia stays planted through the corners and remains comfortable over various road surfaces. Whether you are restoring a daily driver or building a weekend cruiser, moving to a gas-filled shock is one of the most cost-effective ways to modernize the feel of your classic air-cooled front end.
Specifically engineered for the ball joint front suspension, these shocks are designed to adjust automatically to varying road conditions, providing a firm yet forgiving ride. The robust construction features high-quality seals and a durable finish to withstand the elements, making them an excellent choice for everything from street-legal Beetles to custom dune buggies and woods buggies using a ball joint beam. Each shock is sold individually, though we always recommend replacing them in pairs to ensure balanced handling and even tire wear. When you choose these gas shocks from Appletree Automotive, you are investing in a component that offers superior longevity and performance compared to standard budget oil shocks, giving you the confidence to take on the long road ahead.

PRO TIPS
1. Prime the Shocks Before Installation
Even though these are gas-charged shocks, it is a professional best practice to "prime" or "cycle" the shocks before you bolt them onto your Volkswagen. Hold the shock in its vertical operating position and fully compress and extend it three to five times. This ensures that the gas and oil are properly distributed within the internal valving chambers after the shock has been sitting horizontally in a warehouse or shipping box. Doing this prevents any initial "dead spots" in the dampening during your first few miles of driving and ensures the shock provides immediate, consistent control from the moment you pull out of the driveway.
2. Verify Your Suspension Height
These shocks are designed for stock-height Volkswagen front ends. If your Beetle or Ghia has been significantly lowered using "slammed" spindles or an adjustable beam that is turned down to the max, you must verify that you aren''t "bottoming out" the shock. A shock that is fully compressed while the car is at rest or under slight load will result in a harsh ride and will quickly destroy the internal seals and mounting bushings. If your car is extremely low, measure your distance between mounting points at ride height to ensure you have at least 2 inches of upward travel remaining within the 12-1/2 inch compressed limit.
3. Inspect Your Hardware and Bushings
When replacing your shocks, don''t overlook the mounting hardware. Check your upper and lower shock bolts for any signs of "necking" or thread damage. Always use high-quality, high-tensile strength bolts and ensure they are torqued to factory specifications. Additionally, take a moment to inspect the condition of your ball joints and tie rod ends while the shocks are off. Since the front end is already partially disassembled, it is the perfect time to replace worn rubber components or grease your front beam. Properly torqued hardware ensures that the shock eyelets don''t "clunk" or rattle, which is a common complaint after a suspension refresh.
