PRO TIPS
1. Never Skip the Anti-Seize
Before you slide these rods through your beam and trailing arms, apply a generous coating of high-quality anti-seize lubricant to the threaded ends. Off-road environments are notorious for moisture and grit, which can cause galvanic corrosion between the steel rod and the nuts. Using anti-seize ensures that when it comes time for maintenance or front-end adjustments, you won''t have to resort to a torch or a hacksaw to get your suspension apart.
2. Verify Your Nut Clearance
Remember that these thru rods do not use standard hex nuts from the hardware store. They require specialized thru-rod nuts that are designed to fit into the recessed pockets of aftermarket trailing arms. When installing, ensure that the nut is fully seated and that you are using a thick hardened washer if your specific trailing arm manufacturer recommends it. This prevents the rod from "egging out" the mounting holes during high-speed desert crossings.
3. Check for Centering and Binding
When installing the rods through the beam, make sure they are perfectly centered before tightening the nuts down. Once the nuts are snug, cycle the suspension through its full range of motion (up and down) before installing your shocks. You want to feel for any binding or friction. Even though the rods aren''t "springing" like leaves, they must allow the trailing arms to pivot smoothly. If you feel resistance, check the alignment of your beam bushings or bearings, as a bent beam housing will cause the thru rods to bind, leading to premature wear on your trailing arm surfaces.
