OVERVIEW
Upgrading your classic air-cooled Volkswagen from a dated generator system to a modern 55-amp alternator is one of the most impactful reliability improvements you can make. If you''ve ever noticed your headlights dimming at a stoplight or your wipers slowing down during a rainstorm, it''s because the original 30-amp or 38-amp generators simply cannot keep up with modern electrical demands. This EMPI Alternator Conversion Kit provides a steady, regulated stream of power right from idle, ensuring your battery stays topped off and your ignition system receives the consistent voltage necessary for peak engine performance. Whether you are running a high-output stereo, upgraded halogen headlights, or modern electronic ignition, this kit provides the electrical overhead required to keep your VW running strong in modern traffic conditions.
This comprehensive kit is engineered to be a true bolt-on solution, eliminating the guesswork associated with piecing together individual components. By moving to an internal regulator design, you simplify your engine bay''s wiring and remove the failure-prone external regulator typically mounted under the rear seat or on the firewall. The kit includes a high-quality 55-amp alternator, a new alternator stand, a secure mounting strap, a sleek three-piece black backing plate set, and a precision-machined top pulley with a matching V-belt. It''s not just about function; the black finish on the tinware and the polished look of the alternator body provide a clean, professional aesthetic to your Type 1 engine bay. Designed for durability and ease of installation, this kit is the gold standard for enthusiasts looking to modernize their charging system without sacrificing the classic VW spirit.
FITMENT
This conversion kit is designed for 12-Volt Type 1 based engines. Please note that if you are converting a 6-Volt vehicle, additional modifications to the flywheel, starter, and light bulbs will be required.

PRO TIPS FROM THE SHOP
1. The Critical Role of the Dash Warning Light
One of the most common tech calls we receive involves the alternator failing to charge immediately after installation. It is vital to understand that this 55-amp alternator requires the "Gen" or "Alt" warning light in your dashboard to be fully functional. This light bulb acts as the "exciter" for the internal regulator; it sends a small amount of current to the alternator to "wake it up" when you turn the key. If your bulb is burnt out, or if you have disconnected the wire, the alternator will not start charging. Always verify that your dash light illuminates when the key is in the "On" position and extinguishes once the engine is running.
2. Wiring Bypass for External Regulators
Since this alternator features a built-in internal regulator, you must bypass your old external regulator to avoid a "double regulation" scenario which can damage the new unit. When installing this kit, you will typically join the large B+ wires (usually Red) together and the smaller D+ wires (usually Green or Brown) together at the old regulator location. This ensures the current flows directly from the alternator to the battery and the dash light circuit remains intact. Use high-quality heat-shrink connectors to ensure these joins remain vibration-resistant and moisture-proof for years to come.
3. Proper Belt Alignment and Tensioning
To prevent premature bearing wear on your new alternator and to stop the belt from squealing, precision alignment is key. When installing the three-piece backing plate and the pulley, ensure that the alternator pulley is perfectly shimmed to align with the lower crank pulley. Use the included shims between the two halves of the top pulley to adjust the belt tension. A properly tensioned belt should have about 1/2 inch of deflection when pressed firmly in the middle. If the belt is too tight, it will side-load the alternator bearings; if it''s too loose, it will slip, generate heat, and fail to charge the battery efficiently.
