1. The Critical Role of the Dash Warning Light

One of the most common tech calls we receive involves the alternator failing to charge immediately after installation. It is vital to understand that this 55-amp alternator requires the "Gen" or "Alt" warning light in your dashboard to be fully functional. This light bulb acts as the "exciter" for the internal regulator; it sends a small amount of current to the alternator to "wake it up" when you turn the key. If your bulb is burnt out, or if you have disconnected the wire, the alternator will not start charging. Always verify that your dash light illuminates when the key is in the "On" position and extinguishes once the engine is running.

2. Wiring Bypass for External Regulators

Since this alternator features a built-in internal regulator, you must bypass your old external regulator to avoid a "double regulation" scenario which can damage the new unit. When installing this kit, you will typically join the large B+ wires (usually Red) together and the smaller D+ wires (usually Green or Brown) together at the old regulator location.
