Product Overview
Elevate the interior aesthetic of your classic Volkswagen with these EMPI Custom Look Window Cranks. Designed specifically for the later model air-cooled era, these handles offer a significant upgrade over the often-faded or brittle factory plastic units. When you are restoring a vintage Beetle, the small details are what truly separate a standard driver from a show-quality machine. These cranks feature a brilliant, high-luster chrome finish that catches the light and complements other interior brightwork, such as door pulls and dashboard trim. The hard plastic knobs are engineered for durability, providing a firm, tactile grip that makes operating your manual windows a smooth and effortless experience. Whether you are performing a full "restomod" or simply refreshing a tired interior, these EMPI cranks provide that timeless custom look while maintaining the functional integrity your VW deserves.
Engineering excellence is at the heart of every EMPI component, and these window cranks are no exception. Sold as a matched pair, they are designed to be a direct-fit replacement for the 1968 and later Volkswagen window regulators that utilize the screw-on mounting style. One of the most common points of failure in aging Volkswagens is the stripping of the internal splines or the snapping of the original plastic handles after decades of heat cycles. By upgrading to these robust chrome-plated units, you are not only improving the visual appeal of your cabin but also ensuring long-term reliability. The installation is straightforward, allowing you to transform the look of your door panels in just a few minutes with basic hand tools. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that quality matters, which is why we recommend these EMPI handles for anyone looking to combine classic styling with modern manufacturing standards.

Pro Tips from the Appletree Garage
Tip 1: Proper Spline Alignment and "Clocking"
When installing your new EMPI window cranks, pay close attention to the "clocking" of the handle. Before tightening the center screw, place the handle on the regulator spline and check its position with the window fully rolled up. Most enthusiasts prefer the handle to point forward or downward when the window is closed to prevent it from interfering with your knee while driving or hitting the door pull. Ensure the splines are fully seated before you apply torque to the screw; forcing a misaligned handle can strip the softer metal of the regulator shaft, leading to a loose or wobbling crank that won''t stay secure.
Tip 2: Inspect the Plastic Escutcheon and Buffer
Don''t forget the small plastic trim ring (escutcheon) and the finger spring that sits behind the window crank. These components are vital for preventing the metal handle from rubbing directly against your door panel upholstery. If your original plastic spacers are cracked or missing, it is the perfect time to replace them along with the handles. A small amount of white lithium grease on the back of the handle where it meets the spacer can also prevent annoying "creaks" during operation and ensure the handle turns smoothly without binding against the door card.
Tip 3: Maintenance of the Window Regulator
If you find that your windows are difficult to roll up even with new handles, the problem likely lies within the window regulator mechanism inside the door. While you have the handles off, we highly recommend removing the door panel and inspecting the regulator tracks and cable. Clean out the old, hardened grease that has likely turned into a "glue-like" substance over the last 50 years. Apply a fresh coat of high-quality gear grease to the tracks and the regulator gear. This reduces the stress on your new EMPI handles and prevents the internal splines from stripping out due to excessive force.
