        OVERVIEW

Restore your vintage Volkswagen interior to its former glory with the EMPI 4 Piece Door Panel Kit, specifically engineered for the 1965 through 1977 Beetle. Unlike the flimsy, moisture-prone cardboard backings found in many inferior aftermarket sets, these panels are constructed from high-density Masonite. This heavy-duty material ensures that your door cards remain rigid and warp-free for years to come, providing a solid foundation for the classic O.E. style vinyl finish. Whether you are performing a concourse-level restoration or simply cleaning up a daily driver, these panels deliver the authentic look and feel that every air-cooled enthusiast demands. The black vinyl texture is meticulously matched to original specifications, ensuring a seamless integration with your existing seats and headliner.

What truly sets this EMPI kit apart is its innovative, "universal" design that simplifies the installation process for a wide range of model years. The panels feature precision knock-outs for both early and late handle locations, and the clip holes are strategically spaced to accommodate the different mounting patterns used throughout the Beetle''s production run. To add a touch of utility and luxury, both the driver and passenger side front panels come equipped with integrated map pockets, providing much-needed storage space in the compact Bug cabin. The rear panels even include a knock-out for the ash tray, ensuring you don''t have to sacrifice original functionality for a fresh look. This comprehensive kit includes everything you need to overhaul the front and rear of your interior, providing a professional-grade finish that will make your Beetle''s cabin feel brand new again.

        PRO TIPS

        1. Install a Plastic Vapor Barrier

Before you snap your new Masonite panels into place, it is absolutely vital to install a plastic vapor barrier between the metal door frame and the door panel. Even though Masonite is much more durable than cardboard, constant exposure to moisture or window seal leaks can eventually cause damage. You can use a heavy-duty plastic sheet or a pre-cut barrier kit, securing it with a thin bead of silicone or weatherstrip adhesive. This simple step prevents the "wicking" of moisture into the backing board, ensuring your panels stay flat and crisp for decades rather than just a few seasons.

        2. Inspect Your Door Clips and Grommets

Never reuse old, bent, or rusty door panel clips when installing a high-quality kit like this. We highly recommend purchasing a fresh set of stainless steel door clips and new rubber door panel bungs (grommets). Over time, the rubber bungs in the door frame become brittle and crack, which leads to annoying rattles and loose-fitting panels. By replacing the bungs and using new clips, you ensure a tight, factory-snug fit that won''t vibrate while you''re driving down the highway. Make sure to align each clip perfectly with the hole before applying pressure to avoid snapping the Masonite edges.

        3. Careful Knock-out Removal

The beauty of this EMPI kit is the versatility provided by the "knock-outs" for various handle configurations. However, you should never simply "punch" these through from the front. To get the cleanest finish, look at the back of the panel to identify the holes you need based on your specific year. Use a sharp utility knife or a small hole saw from the back side to cut through the Masonite first, then carefully slit the vinyl from the front in an "X" pattern. This allows the vinyl to fold inward when you install your window cranks and door pulls, preventing the material from bunching up or tearing around the hardware for a truly professional look.
