Product Overview
When it comes to the safety and stopping power of your classic air-cooled Volkswagen, there is no component more critical than the master cylinder. This EMPI dual-circuit master cylinder is the definitive solution for owners of 1967 to 1977 Standard Beetles and 1967 to 1974 Karmann Ghias who demand reliable, consistent hydraulic pressure every time they hit the pedal. Transitioning from the older single-circuit systems to the dual-circuit design was a massive safety milestone for VW, and this unit maintains that integrity by ensuring that a failure in one half of the system won''t leave you completely without brakes. Whether you are restoring a vintage daily driver or building a weekend cruiser, this master cylinder provides the firm pedal feel and high-pressure output necessary to navigate modern traffic with total confidence.
Engineered for versatility and performance, this specific model is highly recommended for enthusiasts running a front disc brake and rear drum brake configuration. The 19mm bore is precision-machined to provide the ideal volume of fluid displacement, ensuring that your calipers and wheel cylinders receive the exact pressure required for balanced deceleration. Constructed from high-quality cast iron with internal seals designed to withstand the corrosive nature of modern brake fluids, this unit is built to outlast inferior "budget" alternatives. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that "good enough" isn''t an option when it comes to your braking system, which is why we offer this robust master cylinder as a cornerstone for any Type 1 brake overhaul or disc brake conversion project.

Expert Pro Tips from Appletree Automotive
1. Always Bench Bleed Before Installation
One of the most common mistakes when installing a new VW master cylinder is attempting to bleed the entire system from the wheel cylinders first. You MUST bench bleed the master cylinder before it ever touches the car. Use a bench bleeding kit to loop the output ports back into the reservoir holes. Slow, steady strokes of the piston will purge all trapped air from the internal bore. If you skip this step, you may find it nearly impossible to get a firm pedal later, as air bubbles will remain trapped in the high points of the master cylinder casting. Don''t rush this process; wait until you see zero bubbles returning into the fluid lines.
2. Inspect and Lubricate Your Grommets and Lines
Since this master cylinder does not include the reservoir or the rubber grommets, it is the perfect time to inspect your existing plastic feed lines and the rubber seals that sit atop the master cylinder. Old grommets often become hard and brittle, leading to frustrating leaks that can ruin your new paint. We recommend installing new, high-quality German rubber grommets and using a tiny amount of brake-fluid-compatible assembly lube or clean brake fluid to help the reservoir lines slide into place. Ensure the lines are fully seated to prevent "sucking air" into the system, which can mimic the symptoms of a failing master cylinder.
3. Check Your Pedal Pushrod Clearance
When swapping a master cylinder, you must verify the clearance between the brake pedal pushrod and the master cylinder piston. There should be approximately 1mm of "free play" before the pushrod actually contacts the piston. If the pushrod is too long and constantly applies pressure to the piston, the compensating ports inside the master cylinder will remain closed. This prevents fluid from returning to the reservoir as it heats up and expands, which will eventually cause your brakes to drag or even lock up entirely while driving. Always double-check this adjustment at the pedal cluster to ensure the longevity of your new hydraulic components.
