OVERVIEW
When you are upgrading your vintage Volkswagen to a four-wheel disc brake setup, the original equipment master cylinder simply won''t cut it. Stock master cylinders were designed to move the specific volume of fluid required for drum brakes or a front-disc/rear-drum combination. This high-performance EMPI Dual Circuit Master Cylinder features a larger 20.6mm bore, which is essential for providing the increased fluid displacement and pressure needed to actuate four disc brake calipers simultaneously. Whether you are building a high-speed street Beetle or a rugged off-road dune buggy, having a firm, responsive brake pedal is the difference between a confident drive and a dangerous situation. This unit is the gold standard for enthusiasts who refuse to compromise on stopping power and safety.
Beyond the performance benefits of the larger bore, this master cylinder utilizes a dual-circuit design to provide a critical layer of redundancy for your braking system. In a dual-circuit setup, the front and rear brakes operate on independent hydraulic paths; if one line fails or leaks, the other circuit remains functional, allowing you to bring the vehicle to a safe stop. Engineered by EMPI with precision-machined internals and a durable cast iron housing, this master cylinder is built to withstand the rigors of both daily driving and harsh off-road environments. At Appletree Auto, we know that your VW''s braking system is its most important safety feature, and this 20.6mm master cylinder is the reliable heart that your custom brake system deserves.

PRO TIPS
1. Always Bench Bleed Before Installation
One of the most common mistakes when installing a new master cylinder is trying to bleed the entire system from the wheel cylinders first. You must bench bleed the master cylinder before it ever touches the car. Use a bench bleeding kit to loop the fluid from the output ports back into the reservoir. Gently pump the piston until all air bubbles disappear. If you don''t do this, air will remain trapped in the internal bore, and you''ll spend hours chasing a "spongy" pedal that won''t firm up no matter how much fluid you run through the lines.
2. Verify Pushrod Clearance
When swapping to a high-performance 20.6mm master cylinder, it is vital to check the clearance of your brake pedal pushrod. There should be approximately 1mm of "free play" between the pushrod and the master cylinder piston. If the pushrod is too long and applies constant pressure, the intake ports inside the master cylinder won''t open fully, which prevents the fluid from returning to the reservoir. This leads to "brake drag," where your brakes lock up as the fluid heats up and expands. Always double-check this adjustment after the final bolt-in.
3. Upgrade Your Reservoir and Lines
If you are converting an early VW from a single-circuit to this dual-circuit master cylinder, remember that you cannot reuse your old single-line reservoir. You will need a dual-circuit fluid reservoir and the appropriate blue brake pressure hoses. Ensure all your hard lines are in good condition and that you are using high-quality DOT 4 fluid, which has a higher boiling point than standard DOT 3. This is especially important for disc brake setups, as they generate significantly more heat than traditional drum brakes during spirited driving.
