Overview
Upgrade your air-cooled engine''s ignition system with the EMPI 009-style Chrome Distributor featuring Vacuum Advance. For decades, the standard 009 centrifugal advance distributor has been a staple in the Volkswagen community due to its reliability and predictable advance curve. However, many enthusiasts experienced the notorious "flat spot" during acceleration when pairing a mechanical-only distributor with standard carburetors like the Solex 34-PICT-3. This specialized chrome version solves that legacy issue by integrating a vacuum advance canister with the proven 009 mechanical advance internals. By utilizing the vacuum signal from your carburetor, this distributor provides a much smoother transition off-the-line and improved throttle response throughout the mid-range, making it the perfect choice for daily drivers and weekend cruisers alike.
Beyond the performance benefits, this distributor is designed to stand out in any engine bay. The high-luster chrome finish provides a show-quality appearance that resists corrosion and complements other chrome accessories on your Type 1 upright engine. Internally, the unit is built to exacting standards, featuring a high-quality points and condenser setup that ensures consistent spark delivery. Whether you are building a period-correct restoration, a custom dune buggy, or a high-performance street Beetle, this distributor offers the best of both worlds: the aggressive advance curve of a 009 and the drivability of a vacuum-advance unit. It is a direct replacement for OEM number 023-117-0034 and comes ready to drop into your engine case with minimal fuss.

Pro Tips from the Master Tech
1. Eliminating the Acceleration Flat Spot
If you have ever felt your VW "stumble" right when you step on the gas from a stoplight, you are likely experiencing the flat spot caused by a lack of vacuum advance. When using this distributor, ensure you are connecting the vacuum canister to the correct "ported" vacuum source on your carburetor. On a standard Solex 34-PICT-3, this is the small brass nipple on the left side (driver''s side) of the carb body. Connecting this correctly allows the ignition timing to jump forward the moment the throttle plate opens, providing the extra "oomph" needed to transition from the idle circuit to the main jet circuit without hesitating.
2. Proper Timing and Total Advance
Setting the timing on a dual-advance distributor requires a bit more attention than a standard unit. We recommend setting your "Total Timing" first. With the vacuum hose disconnected and plugged, use a timing light to check the advance at roughly 3,000 to 3,500 RPM. You should aim for approximately 30 to 32 degrees of total mechanical advance. Once this is set, reconnect the vacuum line. At idle, your timing should return to roughly 7.5 to 10 degrees BTDC, depending on your specific engine build. Always check for vacuum leaks at the canister; a leaking diaphragm will cause erratic idling and poor fuel economy.
3. Lubrication and Maintenance
Don''t forget the "hidden" maintenance step that many VW owners overlook. Underneath the rotor, there is a small felt wick located inside the top of the distributor shaft. Every time you change your oil or inspect your points, add two or three drops of light engine oil to this felt wick. This lubricates the advance weights and the pivot points inside the distributor. If this area runs dry, the mechanical advance can seize or become sticky, leading to an engine that stays "advanced" at idle or fails to reach full advance at high speeds. Keeping this lubricated ensures the chrome distributor performs as well as it looks for years to share.
