PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Avoid Excessive Thread Sealant
Because this is a single-terminal sender, it relies on the engine case or the mounting block for its electrical ground. If you wrap the threads too thick with Teflon tape or use an excessive amount of liquid pipe sealant, you can actually insulate the sender from the ground source. This will result in a gauge that stays pegged at the maximum reading or behaves erratically. For the best results, use a very small amount of conductive thread sealant or just a single wrap of tape, leaving the bottom-most threads bare to ensure a solid metal-to-metal connection with the engine.
Tip 2: Remote Mounting for Longevity
Air-cooled VW engines are notorious for high-frequency vibration, especially when equipped with performance cams or stiff urethane mounts. Mounting a heavy sender directly to the engine case or a thin oil pump cover can lead to fatigue failure of the brass fittings or the sender internals over time. I highly recommend using a "Remote Relocation Kit," which consists of a short length of braided stainless steel hose. This allows you to mount the sender to the firewall or a frame rail, isolating it from engine vibration and making it much easier to access for maintenance.
Tip 3: Confirm Gauge Calibration
It is vital to remember that not all 100 PSI senders are created equal. This ATM2242 sender is specifically calibrated to the resistance curve used by AutoMeter''s short-sweep gauges. If you try to use this with a VDO, Stewart Warner, or a "Long Sweep" (90-degree or 270-degree) AutoMeter gauge, your readings will be wildly inaccurate. Always verify that your gauge is an AutoMeter electric short-sweep model before installation to ensure you are getting the precision data you need to protect your investment.
