OVERVIEW
When it comes to the drivability of your classic air-cooled Volkswagen, few components are as critical yet as frequently overlooked as the throttle cable. This EMPI replacement throttle cable is engineered specifically for the late-model 1975 through 1979 Beetles, which featured the transition to fuel injection systems. Over decades of use, an original factory cable will inevitably stretch, fray, or develop internal friction due to moisture and grit entering the guide tube. This leads to a "spongy" pedal feel, inconsistent idling, or even a dangerous sticking throttle. By installing this precision-manufactured 2608mm cable, you are restoring the crisp, immediate throttle response that your Volkswagen had when it first rolled off the assembly line in Wolfsburg. Whether you are performing a routine maintenance overhaul or chasing down a mysterious hesitation in your acceleration, a fresh cable is often the simplest and most effective solution to improve your driving experience.
As a master specialist, I cannot stress enough the importance of using the correct length for these specific late-model years. The 2608mm length is tailored to navigate the chassis of the fuel-injected era, ensuring there is enough slack to prevent binding while remaining taut enough to provide a full range of motion from the pedal assembly to the throttle body. EMPI has manufactured this cable using high-tensile strength multi-strand steel, designed to resist the stretching that common "universal" cables suffer from. The ends are finished to exacting tolerances to ensure a secure fit at the pedal cluster and the throttle linkage, preventing the common frustration of a cable slipping out of its seat at the worst possible moment. Don''t settle for a generic substitute when you can install a component designed specifically for the unique geometry of the 1975-1979 Beetle chassis.

PRO TIPS
1. Lubricate Before Installation
One of the most common mistakes I see during installation is sliding a dry cable into the guide tube. Before you thread this new EMPI cable through the chassis, apply a light coating of high-quality white lithium grease or a specialized dry graphite lubricant along the entire length of the wire. This significantly reduces friction against the internal walls of the metal guide tube, preventing premature wear and ensuring the smoothest possible pedal action. However, avoid using heavy chassis grease, as it can attract dirt and eventually gum up the cable, causing it to stick in colder temperatures.
2. Inspect the Bowden Tube and Guide Pipe
A new throttle cable won''t fix a damaged guide system. Before feeding the new 2608mm cable through, take a moment to inspect the metal guide tube that runs through the center tunnel and the flexible Bowden tube at the rear. If the metal tube is kinked or if the flexible section is cracked and filled with debris, your new cable will fray and fail prematurely. I always recommend blowing out the guide tube with compressed air and a bit of brake cleaner to remove old, hardened grease and grit before sliding the new cable into place. If the guide tube is compromised, even the best cable will feel stiff or "notchy" underfoot.
3. Achieving Full Throttle Without Overstress
When adjusting the cable at the engine side, you want to ensure that when the gas pedal is fully depressed, the throttle plate is wide open, but you must be careful not to "over-tighten" it. If the cable is too tight, the pedal will act as a lever that puts hundreds of pounds of force on the cable ends once the throttle body hits its physical stop, which will eventually snap the cable at the Z-bend. Have a helper hold the gas pedal to the floor while you adjust the barrel nut at the engine; set it so the throttle is just reaching its maximum opening without the cable being under extreme tension. This "sweet spot" ensures maximum performance while significantly extending the life of your new component.
