Throttle Cable for Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia (2642mm)
Ensure smooth and reliable acceleration with this high-quality replacement Throttle Cable from Appletree Auto. Specifically designed for 1971-1974 Volkswagen Beetles and Karmann Ghias, this cable features a total length of 2642mm, providing the precise reach needed for standard air-cooled engine configurations. A frayed or stretched throttle cable can lead to a "sticky" pedal feel or, worse, a complete break that leaves you stranded. Replacing your aged cable is a simple and cost-effective way to restore the responsive throttle feel your classic VW had when it was new.
Constructed with a durable steel inner wire and designed for long-lasting service, this cable is a direct-fit replacement for the factory original. Whether you are performing a routine tune-up or finishing a full restoration, Appletree Auto provides the dependable parts you need to keep your air-cooled Volkswagen on the road and performing at its best.
Product Fitment & Compatibility
This throttle cable is designed for Left Hand Drive (LHD) models with standard 1600cc based engines. Please verify your required length before ordering, especially if your vehicle has been modified with custom carburetion.

- Volkswagen Super Beetle: 1971 - 1974
- Volkswagen Karmann Ghia: 1971 - 1974
Tech Tips & Installation Advice
- Lubrication is Essential: Before sliding the new cable into the chassis guide tube, apply a light coat of high-quality multi-purpose grease or cable lubricant to the entire length of the inner wire. This significantly reduces friction, prevents rust inside the tube, and ensures a much smoother pedal feel.
- Check the Guide Tube: Inspect the metal guide tube that runs through the fan shroud. If it is bent, cracked, or missing its support clip, it can cause the cable to saw through the metal or bind. Ensure the tube is properly aligned with the carburetor linkage.
- Adjusting Slack: When connecting the cable to the carburetor, ensure there is a small amount of slack (about 1-2mm) when the pedal is at rest. If the cable is too tight, it may prevent the engine from returning to a proper idle; if it is too loose, you won't achieve "Wide Open Throttle" (WOT) when the pedal is floored.
- Inspect the Pedal Cluster: While the cable is disconnected, take a moment to inspect the throttle arm and "S" hook at the pedal cluster. Ensure the pin and arm are moving freely and are not excessively worn or bent, which can lead to premature cable failure.
- Seal the Entrance: Check the rubber boot or grommet where the cable enters the chassis from the engine compartment. Replacing a cracked seal prevents dirt and moisture from entering the guide tube, extending the life of your new throttle cable.
