OVERVIEW
When you''re behind the wheel of a classic air-cooled Volkswagen, the connection between the driver and the machine starts at the gear lever. The EMPI Trigger Shifter is designed to replace the often-vague and long-throw sensation of the factory shifter with a crisp, mechanical precision that transforms your driving experience. Featuring a 12-inch overall length, this shifter provides an ergonomic reach that is perfect for stock interiors, custom street cars, and rugged dune buggies alike. The high-polish chrome shaft doesn''t just look the part; it is engineered to reduce shift throw, allowing you to move through the gears with speed and confidence. By eliminating the "rowing a boat" feel of a worn-out stock unit, this trigger shifter ensures that every gear change is deliberate and secure, giving you the performance edge whether you''re navigating city traffic or blasting through a sand wash.
Safety and functionality are at the forefront of this design, specifically with the integration of the sliding trigger reverse lockout. Unlike the original VW shifter that requires you to push the entire lever down to find reversea move that can become difficult or unreliable as stock components wearthe EMPI design utilizes a dedicated finger trigger. This mechanical lockout prevents accidental engagement of reverse when you''re aiming for second gear, protecting your transmission''s synchronizers and gears from unnecessary wear. The classic round knob provides a comfortable, vintage-inspired grip that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, while the robust steel construction ensures that this shifter can handle the rigors of spirited driving. At Appletree Auto, we know that the right shifter is the centerpiece of a VW interior, and this 12-inch trigger model delivers the perfect balance of "Old School" aesthetics and modern mechanical reliability.

PRO TIPS
1. Master the Shift Plate Alignment
The most common mistake when installing a new shifter is failing to properly align the stop plate (the plate underneath the shifter base). To get it perfect, place the transmission in neutral before tightening the bolts. You want to align the plate so that there is a slight "click" or resistance when moving the lever into the reverse gate, but no interference when shifting between 1st and 2nd. If you find yourself hitting reverse when you want 1st, or if 3rd gear feels "blocked," loosen the two 13mm bolts and slide the plate in small 1/16-inch increments until the pattern is centered. Tighten one bolt, test the pattern, and once it is perfect, torque both bolts down securely.
2. Inspect Your Shift Rod Bushing and Coupler
A high-performance shifter like the EMPI Trigger Shifter can only do so much if the rest of your linkage is sloppy. While you have the old shifter removed, look down into the tunnel at the shift rod. Check the white plastic shift rod bushing (the "hanger" bushing) located just behind the shifter hole. If it is cracked, missing, or the bracket is bent, your new shifter will still feel "mushy." Additionally, check the shift rod coupler under the rear seat inspection plate. Replacing these inexpensive wear items at the same time as your shifter installation will result in a "rifle-bolt" shifting feel that makes the car feel brand new.
3. Proper Lubrication for Longevity
Metal-on-metal contact is the enemy of smooth shifting. Before final assembly, apply a generous amount of high-quality lithium grease or moly-grease to the ball at the bottom of the shifter and into the socket of the shift rod. Don''t forget to apply a light film of grease to the sliding trigger mechanism inside the chrome shaft. Over time, road dust can enter the cabin and dry out these pivot points. A well-lubricated shifter not only moves more freely but also prevents the "chirping" or "squeaking" noises often associated with aftermarket shifters. Periodically checking this lubrication during your routine maintenance will keep the trigger action smooth for years to come.
