OVERVIEW
There is nothing more nerve-wracking than cruising down the highway in your classic air-cooled Volkswagen and wondering if your fuel needle is lying to you. Over decades of service, original fuel tank sending units succumb to corrosion, varnish buildup from old gasoline, and mechanical wear, leading to erratic readings or a completely dead gauge. This EMPI Fuel Tank Sending Unit is the definitive solution for 1968 and later Beetles, Karmann Ghias, and Type 3 models equipped with electrical fuel gauges. Engineered to provide precise resistance feedback to your stock speedometer head, this unit ensures that when the needle says you''re hitting reserve, you actually have gas in the tank. It''s an essential component for any restoration project or daily driver where reliability is non-negotiable. Don''t let a faulty sender ruin your weekend cruise; replace it with a unit designed to meet or exceed original equipment specifications.
This sending unit is a direct-fit replacement for the factory 5-bolt configuration found on later-model air-cooled Volkswagens. Unlike some budget alternatives that require you to hunt for hardware or reuse old, brittle parts, this kit comes complete with a fresh cork gasket and all five mounting screws, ensuring a leak-free seal from the moment you install it. The internal rheostat is calibrated to the standard VW specification of 73 Ohms at empty and 10 Ohms at full, making it perfectly compatible with your original 12V electrical system and factory gauges. Whether you''re finishing a ground-up restoration or simply tired of carrying an emergency gas can in the trunk, this EMPI sender provides the accuracy and durability you need to get back on the road with confidence. It''s a small investment that pays massive dividends in peace of mind every time you glance at your dashboard.

PRO TIPS
1. Test Before You Install
Before you bolt the new sender into the tank and fill it with fuel, it is a master-tech best practice to plug the wire onto the sender and ground the sender''s body to the chassis. Turn the ignition to the "on" position and slowly move the float arm by hand from the bottom to the top. Watch your fuel gauge to ensure the needle moves smoothly from empty to full. This confirms that your wiring and your gauge are functioning correctly before you finalize the installation. If the gauge doesn''t move, you likely have a wiring break or a faulty vibrator/stabilizer on the back of the speedometer rather than a sender issue.
2. The Importance of a Solid Ground
A significant percentage of "faulty" fuel senders are actually the result of a poor ground connection. The sender relies on its physical contact with the fuel tank, and the fuel tank relies on its contact with the body, to complete the electrical circuit. If your tank has been freshly painted or if there is heavy corrosion around the mounting holes, the sender won''t be able to ground properly. We recommend cleaning a small patch of metal to bare steel under one of the mounting screws or running a dedicated ground wire from one of the sender mounting bolts directly to the vehicle chassis to ensure a consistent and accurate reading.
3. Proper Gasket Sealing Sequence
When installing the new cork gasket, do not over-tighten the five mounting screws immediately. Cork can split or extrude if uneven pressure is applied. Place the sender and gasket onto the tank and start all five screws by hand to ensure they aren''t cross-threaded. Tighten them in a "star" pattern, much like you would tighten the lug nuts on a wheel. This ensures even pressure across the gasket surface, preventing fuel vapors from escaping or raw fuel from seeping out when you have a full tank. Avoid using RTV silicone on the gasket, as gasoline will eventually break down standard silicone and lead to leaks or clogged fuel filters.
