The EMPI Heat Riser Block-Offs are designed to seal the heat riser flanges on your aircooled VW exhaust system. These are essential when running performance dual carburetor setups or aftermarket intake manifolds that do not utilize the factory pre-heat pipes. By blocking off these ports, you prevent exhaust leaks and maintain proper backpressure within the system.

Vehicle Fitment and Compatibility

These block-off plates are compatible with a wide range of Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 aircooled Volkswagen engines. They are designed to fit 1100cc, 1200cc, 1300cc, 1500cc, and 1600cc exhaust systems. The kit includes a pair of heavy-duty plates and the necessary gaskets to ensure a tight seal against the exhaust port.

Surface Preparation is Key: Before installing your new block-off plates, use a wire brush or a gasket scraper to remove all old gasket material and carbon buildup from the exhaust flange. A clean, flat surface is required to prevent annoying exhaust leaks.

Use High-Temp Sealant: While the kit includes gaskets, applying a very thin layer of high-temperature copper RTV sealant to both sides of the gasket can provide extra insurance against leaks, especially on older exhaust manifolds that may have minor pitting.

Heat Cycle Re-Torquing: Exhaust components undergo significant thermal expansion and contraction. After installing the block-offs and running the engine through two or three full heat cycles, go back and check the tightness of the nuts to ensure they haven't vibrated loose or settled.
