Chrome Heat Riser Block-Offs, for Aircooled VW, Pair
* Covers heat riser flanges when intake heat riser isn''t used.
* A must when installing most dual carb kits.
* Includes gaskets.
* Sold as a pair.
OVERVIEW
When transitioning your classic air-cooled Volkswagen from a restrictive stock single-carburetor setup to a high-performance dual-carburetor system, you will find that the original intake manifold heat riser tubes are no longer necessary. Leaving the corresponding ports on your exhaust header or muffler open is not an option, as it results in a massive exhaust leak that ruins performance, creates excessive noise, and can even melt your engine tin or wiring. These EMPI Chrome Heat Riser Block-Offs provide the perfect professional solution to seal those ports permanently while adding a custom, show-ready look to your engine bay. Designed to bolt directly onto the standard small-flange heat riser ports found on most Type 1 style exhausts, these plates ensure that all exhaust gases are directed out through the tailpipes where they belong.
Beyond their functional necessity, these block-off plates are manufactured with the quality and fitment that VW enthusiasts have come to expect from EMPI. Each plate features a high-luster chrome finish that resists corrosion and complements other chrome engine accessories like valve covers and air cleaners. The kit comes complete with a pair of gaskets to ensure a gas-tight seal, preventing the ''''chirping'''' sound often associated with minor exhaust leaks. Whether you are building a weekend cruiser, a dedicated drag racer, or a rugged off-road woods buggy, sealing your exhaust system properly is critical for maintaining correct backpressure and engine cooling efficiency. These block-offs are a small investment that pays off in both engine reliability and aesthetic appeal, making them a staple for any dual-carburetor conversion project.
FITMENT
These heat riser block-off plates are designed for use with most air-cooled Volkswagen engines equipped with an exhaust system featuring heat riser flanges. Common fitments include:

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Surface Preparation is Critical
Before installing your new chrome block-off plates, it is absolutely essential to clean the mounting surface on the exhaust header or muffler. Use a gasket scraper or a wire brush to remove any remnants of old gaskets, carbon buildup, or rust. If the flange surface is uneven, a light sanding with a flat block will help ensure the new gasket seats perfectly. A clean, flat surface is the only way to prevent annoying exhaust leaks that can lead to popping on deceleration or lean-running conditions.
Tip 2: Use High-Quality Hardware and Anti-Seize
Because these plates are located in an area subject to extreme heat cycles, the mounting hardware can often become seized or brittle over time. We recommend using new Grade 8 bolts or stainless steel hardware for the installation. Additionally, applying a small amount of high-temperature copper anti-seize to the bolt threads will make future maintenance much easier. Tighten the bolts evenly to ensure the plate applies uniform pressure across the gasket, but avoid over-torquing, which can warp the plate or strip the threads in the header flange.
Tip 3: Re-Torque After the First Heat Cycle
Exhaust components expand and contract significantly as they reach operating temperature. After installing these block-offs and your new gaskets, take the vehicle for a 15 to 20-minute drive to allow the engine to reach full temperature. Once the engine has completely cooled down, go back and check the tightness of the mounting bolts. You will often find that the gasket has compressed slightly or the bolts have settled. A final snugging of the hardware will ensure a permanent, leak-free seal for the life of your engine.
