1. Secure the Gland Nut Correctly
While the EMPI 7010-10 is incredibly sturdy, we always recommend that you do not perform the final "big torque" on the flywheel gland nut while the engine is suspended on the stand. The leverage required to reach 217+ ft-lbs can put excessive side-load on the engine case mounting ears. Instead, use a flywheel lock and perform your final torquing while the engine is on a low-profile floor dolly or after it is safely mated to the transaxle. This protects your engine case from potential stress fractures at the mounting points.
2. Keep Your Workspace Clean with a Tray
Air-cooled engine building is a messy business, especially during the teardown phase when residual oil trapped in the galleys begins to leak. We highly recommend pairing this stand with the EMPI Engine Stand Tray. It fits perfectly into the base of the 7010-10 and catches every drop of oil, assembly lube, and even those tiny woodruff keys that always seem to drop at the worst moment. It keeps your shop floor safe and clean, ensuring you aren''t tracking oil into your house or across your garage.
3. Lubricate the Mounting Head
Before mounting your engine case to the stand, apply a light film of multi-purpose grease to the mounting head and the contact points. This makes it significantly easier to rotate the engine case when you need to switch from working on the cylinder heads to the oil pump or sump area. Additionally, always double-check that your mounting bolts are high-grade (Grade 8 or 10.9) and have sufficient thread engagement into the stand to ensure the engine remains level and secure throughout the entire build process.
