OVERVIEW
Upgrade your air-cooled legend with the ultimate in stopping technology. This EMPI Ball Joint Front Disc Brake Kit is specifically engineered for the enthusiast who demands superior braking performance without sacrificing the classic 4 on 130mm bolt pattern. By integrating world-renowned Wilwood red calipers with precision-drilled rotors, this kit provides a massive increase in thermal efficiency and clamping force compared to outdated factory drum brakes. Whether you are navigating steep canyon descents or stop-and-go city traffic, the confidence provided by a modern disc setup is incomparable. The drilled rotors aren''t just for show; they actively dissipate heat and outgas pads to ensure consistent, fade-free braking even under spirited driving conditions. This is the single most important safety upgrade you can perform on your vintage Volkswagen.
Designed as a comprehensive hardware solution for those who already possess disc-brake-specific spindles, this kit bridges the gap between vintage aesthetics and modern race-inspired engineering. The inclusion of high-performance Wilwood brake pads ensures an aggressive initial bite while maintaining a street-friendly noise profile. Every component, from the premium wheel bearings to the specialized dust caps, has been curated to meet the rigorous demands of the air-cooled community. Because this kit utilizes the standard 4x130 lug pattern with 14x1.5mm threaded holes, you can maintain that iconic VW look while benefitting from the reliability of a Wilwood hydraulic system. It''s time to stop worrying about brake fade and start enjoying the precision that only a high-end disc conversion can offer your Beetle.

PRO TIPS
1. Verify Your Spindle Type
It is absolutely critical to understand that this kit does not include spindles and will NOT bolt onto your factory drum brake spindles. The mounting ears for a disc brake caliper are positioned differently than the backing plate mounts for a drum system. Before ordering, ensure you have either factory disc brake spindles or aftermarket dropped disc brake spindles. If you are currently running drums, you will need to purchase the appropriate disc-compatible spindles to complete this installation. Attempting to modify drum spindles is unsafe and will result in improper caliper alignment.
2. The 1969-Later Tie Rod Requirement
When converting an early ball joint car (1966-1968) to a disc brake setup, you must transition to 1969-and-later style tie rod ends. The taper on the steering arm of a disc brake spindle is larger than that of the early drum spindles. Using early tie rod ends in a late-style spindle will result in a loose fit that can lead to catastrophic steering failure. Always double-check your tie rod end fitment during the assembly phase to ensure the nut seats fully and the cotter pin can be properly installed.
3. Master Cylinder and Residual Pressure Valves
When upgrading from drums to discs, your hydraulic requirements change. Drum brakes typically utilize a residual pressure valve (usually 10 lbs) to keep the shoes close to the drum. Disc brakes, however, require very little or no residual pressure (usually 2 lbs or none) to prevent the pads from dragging and overheating the rotors. If you find your new brakes are dragging or the wheels are difficult to turn after a few miles, check your master cylinder. We highly recommend installing a dual-circuit master cylinder designed specifically for disc brake applications to ensure the correct fluid volume and pressure for the Wilwood calipers.
