EMPI Crankshaft End Play Tool for Aircooled VW Motors
Product Overview
The EMPI Crankshaft End Play Tool (Part #7004) is an essential diagnostic instrument designed for rebuilding aircooled VW engines. This tool allows builders to accurately measure the longitudinal movement of the crankshaft without the need for an expensive dial indicator setup. Proper end play adjustment is critical to prevent rear main bearing seizure and ensure long-term engine reliability.
Vehicle Fitment
This tool is universal for the aircooled Volkswagen platform. It is compatible with:
- VW Type 1 (Beetle, Karmann Ghia, Thing)
- VW Type 2 (Bus, Transporter)
- VW Type 3 (Squareback, Fastback, Notchback)
- Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Trikes utilizing VW aircooled cases
Pro Tech Tips for Precise Measurement
Tip 1: Verify Crank Movement via the Distributor. Before attaching the tool, ensure the crankshaft moves freely within the case. A professional trick is to grasp the distributor rotor and turn it by hand; this should move the crank back and forth. If the crank does not move using this method, there may be an internal clearance issue or a binding bearing that must be addressed before measuring end play.
Tip 2: Perform Initial Setup Without Seals. For the most accurate reading, start your measurement process using three shims totaling approximately .030" without installing the flywheel seals. Bolt the flywheel to the crankshaft and tighten it to the full factory torque specification of 270 foot-pounds. This ensures the flywheel is fully seated against the shims, providing a true baseline for your feeler gauge measurements.
Tip 3: Proper Tool Positioning and Calibration. Mount the tool to the engine case using the mounting hole located above the #1 cylinder. With the flywheel pushed all the way toward the front of the engine, adjust the tool's set screw until it just touches the flywheel face and lock it into position. Push the flywheel toward the rear of the car and use a feeler gauge to measure the resulting gap. Your goal is a final clearance of .004" to .006".
