1. Verify Wheel Clearance Before Final Assembly
While this kit is designed for a 4 on 130mm pattern, the Wilwood billet calipers have a larger profile than standard cast calipers. It is absolutely critical that you test-fit your 15-inch wheels before finishing the installation. Check for clearance between the inner diameter of the wheel rim and the top of the caliper, as well as the space between the back of the wheel spokes and the caliper face. In some cases, thin wheel spacers may be required depending on the offset and design of your specific wheels. Don''t find out your wheels won''t spin after you''ve already bled the brake system!
2. Upgrade Your Master Cylinder and Remove Residual Valves
When switching from a four-wheel drum setup or a basic disc setup to high-performance Wilwood calipers, you should ideally upgrade to a 20.6mm dual-circuit master cylinder to provide the necessary fluid volume. Additionally, if your existing master cylinder or brake lines contain residual pressure valves (commonly used in drum systems to keep the shoes close to the drum), they must be removed for the disc brake circuit. Leaving a residual valve in a disc brake line will cause the pads to drag, leading to excessive heat, premature wear, and potential rotor warping.
3. Perform a Professional Alignment Post-Installation
Installing drop spindles changes the geometry of your front suspension. Even though these spindles are designed to maintain stock-like steering characteristics, any time you disassemble the tie rods and spindles, your toe-in and camber settings will be affected. After the installation is complete and the car is back on its own weight, take it to a professional alignment shop. Proper alignment is the only way to ensure even tire wear and to prevent the ''darty'' or unstable steering feel that can occur when a lowered VW is not properly indexed. This step is the difference between a car that looks good and a car that drives perfectly.
