EMPI Distributor Drive Puller for Aircooled VW Engines
Essential Tool for Professional VW Engine Service
The EMPI Distributor Drive Puller (Part #7019) is a specialized tool designed to simplify the removal and installation of the distributor drive gear. Removing this gear without the proper tool often results in damaged gear teeth or, worse, dropping the drive gear shims into the engine case. This tool allows you to extract the drive gear safely while the engine is fully assembled, saving hours of teardown time.
Vehicle Fitment & Compatibility
This tool is compatible with all standard aircooled Volkswagen engines. It is a vital addition to your toolbox if you are working on the following models:
- VW Beetle & Super Beetle
- VW Karmann Ghia
- VW Bus (Type 2)
- VW Type 3 (Fastback, Squareback, Notchback)
- VW Thing (Type 181)
Pro Tech Tips from Appletree Auto
1. Secure the Thrust Shims: There are two small brass thrust shims located directly beneath the distributor drive gear. When using the puller, go slowly and use a telescopic magnet to ensure these shims do not fall off the drive shaft and into the bottom of the engine case during extraction.
2. Verify Drive Gear Orientation: When reinstalling the gear, remember that the slot is offset. With the engine set to Top Dead Center (TDC) for cylinder #1, the smaller segment of the offset slot should face towards the crankshaft pulley. Proper alignment is critical for correct ignition timing.
3. Use Assembly Lube: Before sliding the drive gear back into place, apply a generous coating of assembly lube or clean engine oil to the gear teeth. This prevents "dry" friction against the brass drive gear on the crankshaft during the first start-up after service.
