OVERVIEW
When it comes to your vintage Volkswagen''s braking system, there is absolutely no room for compromise. The EMPI Stainless Steel Braided Brake Line for 1959-1964 Swing Axle Beetles is engineered to provide a firm, responsive pedal feel that stock rubber hoses simply cannot match. Over time, original rubber lines become soft and prone to expansion under hydraulic pressure, leading to a "spongy" brake pedal and decreased stopping efficiency. This premium upgrade features a high-strength Kevlar inner liner wrapped in a rugged stainless steel braid, ensuring that every ounce of pressure from your master cylinder is transmitted directly to the wheel cylinders. Because these lines do not swell under heavy braking, you gain significantly better modulation and shorter stopping distances, which is crucial whether you are navigating modern traffic or pushing your air-cooled classic on a weekend cruise.
Safety and durability are the hallmarks of this EMPI performance component. Unlike standard aftermarket hoses, this line is fully DOT approved, meeting rigorous safety standards for street use. The stainless steel outer braid provides an extra layer of protection against road debris, abrasion, and the corrosive elements that often plague the underside of a classic VW. Designed specifically as a stock replacement for the rear of swing axle Beetles from the late fifties to the mid-sixties, this line features 10mm female fittings on both ends for a seamless installation. Whether you are performing a full pan-off restoration or just looking to modernize your daily driver''s safety equipment, these braided lines offer the perfect blend of vintage fitment and modern performance technology. Don''t settle for less when it comes to your VW''s ability to stop; upgrade to the reliability of stainless steel.

PRO TIPS
1. Avoid Twisting During Installation
One of the most common mistakes when installing braided stainless lines is allowing the hose to twist as you tighten the fittings. Stainless steel braid is much less forgiving than rubber; if the line is twisted, it creates internal stress that can lead to premature failure or restricted fluid flow. Always hold the hex portion of the hose steady with one wrench while tightening the brake line nut with a high-quality flare nut wrench. Ensure the line maintains its natural "lay" without any kinks or rotational tension before you final-torque the connections.
2. Always Replace in Pairs and Use Fresh Fluid
While these are sold individually, we highly recommend replacing both rear brake lines at the same time. If one rubber hose has reached the end of its service life, the other is likely not far behind. Replacing them as a set ensures balanced braking pressure across the rear axle. Furthermore, whenever you open the hydraulic system, it is the perfect time to flush the entire system with fresh, high-quality DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid. Old brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can lead to internal corrosion in your wheel cylinders and master cylinder.
3. Use Flare Nut Wrenches for a Stripped-Free Job
Vintage VW brake fittings are notorious for being seized or rounded off by previous owners using standard open-end wrenches. To protect your new EMPI stainless lines and your existing hard lines, always use a dedicated 10mm flare nut wrench (also known as a line wrench). This tool grips the fitting on five sides rather than just two, significantly reducing the risk of stripping the soft metal nuts. If the old line is stubborn, apply a quality penetrating oil and let it soak for several hours before attempting to break the seal. Taking your time here prevents a simple hose swap from turning into a full hard-line replacement project.
