OVERVIEW
When it comes to the mechanical heart of your air-cooled Volkswagen''s transmission system, the clutch cable arm is a critical component that often goes overlooked until it fails. This EMPI Long Version Clutch Cable Arm is engineered to provide the necessary leverage required to actuate the pressure plate with ease, offering a smoother and more consistent pedal feel compared to worn-out or shorter factory variants. Over decades of use, the original arm on your Beetle or 002 Bus can suffer from metal fatigue, wallowed-out cable eyelets, or stripped internal splines, all of which lead to a "spongy" clutch or, worse, a complete loss of shifting capability. By upgrading to this precision-manufactured arm, you are ensuring that every millimeter of cable travel is efficiently converted into throw-out bearing movement, keeping your classic VW shifting smoothly through every gear.
Designed specifically for the 16mm cross-shaft found in 1961 through 1971 models, this arm features an 86.3mm center-to-center measurement, providing the "Long Version" geometry that many builders prefer for improved mechanical advantage. Whether you are restoring a vintage Bug to showroom specifications or building a rugged off-road rail that needs to withstand the rigors of heavy-duty clutch kits, this EMPI component delivers the durability you demand. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that the small details make the biggest difference in drivability, which is why we offer this high-quality steel arm as a direct replacement for your aging hardware. Don''t let a bent or stressed clutch arm leave you stranded on the side of the road; refresh your linkage with a part built to handle the torque and tension of your air-cooled drivetrain.

PRO TIPS
1. Inspect Your Splines and the Pinch Bolt
Before installing your new clutch arm, meticulously inspect the splines on your throw-out cross-shaft. If the shaft splines are rounded or damaged, the new arm will not seat correctly and may eventually strip out under the pressure of the clutch cable. Always use a high-quality grade 8 pinch bolt and ensure it is tightened to the proper torque specification. A loose bolt is the leading cause of premature arm failure, as it allows the arm to "rock" on the shaft, eventually destroying the teeth on both the arm and the shaft.
2. Lubricate the Cable Eyelet Regularly
The point where the clutch cable hook or clevis meets the eyelet of the clutch arm is a high-friction zone. Over time, metal-on-metal contact will wear down the eyelet, making it thin and prone to snapping. We recommend applying a small dab of high-pressure moly grease to the eyelet during installation and during your annual maintenance checks. This simple step significantly reduces friction, prevents "squeaking" noises during clutch engagement, and extends the lifespan of both the cable and the arm itself.
3. Verify Your Cable Length and Freeplay
Because this is the "Long Version" arm, it may change the required adjustment of your clutch cable compared to a shorter stock arm. After installation, always re-adjust your clutch wingnut to ensure you have roughly 1/2 inch to 1 inch of freeplay at the pedal. If the cable is too tight, you risk keeping constant pressure on the throw-out bearing, which will lead to premature bearing failure and potential clutch slippage. Proper adjustment ensures the bearing only touches the pressure plate when you actually depress the pedal.
