OVERVIEW
When you are pushing the limits of your air-cooled Volkswagen, whether it is on the drag strip or navigating technical dunes in a sand rail, the standard cable-operated clutch system often becomes the weakest link in your drivetrain. The Wilwood Pull-Type Clutch Slave Cylinder (WIL260-1333) is the definitive solution for drivers looking to convert to a high-performance hydraulic setup. Unlike traditional push-type cylinders, this pull-style unit is specifically engineered to provide a linear, consistent pull on the clutch release lever, eliminating the flex and eventual breakage associated with old-school cables. By utilizing a hydraulic system, you gain unparalleled precision in clutch modulation, which is absolutely essential when you are running heavy-duty pressure plates that would otherwise make a cable-driven pedal feel like a leg workout. This cylinder ensures that every bit of force you apply to the pedal is translated directly to the transaxle, providing a smooth and predictable engagement point every single time you shift.
Constructed from high-strength billet aluminum and featuring a rugged steel rod, this Wilwood slave cylinder is built to withstand the harsh environments that VW enthusiasts frequent. The 7/8-inch bore is perfectly matched for most common master cylinder sizes, providing the ideal mechanical advantage to move the clutch arm through its full 1-3/8 inch stroke without excessive pedal effort. Its sleek, compact design and 11-3/4 inch overall length make it versatile enough to mount in the tight confines of a custom chassis, a Baja Bug, or a classic Beetle transaxle area. At Appletree Auto, we know that reliability is everything when you are miles away from the nearest pavement, and Wilwood''s reputation for racing excellence ensures that this slave cylinder won''t leave you stranded with a limp pedal. If you are tired of adjusting cables and dealing with inconsistent clutch feel, this is the professional-grade upgrade your Volkswagen deserves.
FITMENT
This Wilwood Pull-Type Slave Cylinder is a universal-fit performance component commonly used in hydraulic clutch conversions for the following applications:

PRO TIPS
1. Perfect Alignment is Critical
Because this is a pull-type cylinder, the alignment of the pull-rod to the clutch release arm is absolutely vital for longevity. You must ensure that the cylinder is mounted so that the rod pulls in a perfectly straight line relative to the arc of the clutch arm. If the cylinder is mounted at an angle, it will put side-load on the internal seals and the piston, leading to premature leaks or a "notchy" pedal feel. We recommend mocking up the mount with the clutch fully depressed and fully released to ensure the rod remains as parallel to the direction of travel as possible throughout the entire stroke.
2. Mastering the Bleeding Process
Hydraulic clutch systems can be notoriously difficult to bleed because air bubbles love to hide in the highest points of the lines. To get a rock-solid pedal, we suggest "bench bleeding" the cylinder before final installation or using a vacuum bleeder at the slave cylinder end. If you are doing it manually, ensure the slave cylinder is positioned so the bleeder screw (if applicable) or the line outlet is at the highest point. Another pro trick is to use a pressure bleeder from the master cylinder reservoir to force the air down through the system, which is often more effective than the "pump and hold" method on these custom air-cooled setups.
3. Match Your Master Cylinder Bore
To achieve the best pedal feel and full clutch disengagement, you need to match this 7/8-inch slave cylinder with the correct master cylinder bore. Typically, a 3/4-inch or 7/8-inch master cylinder works best. If you use a master cylinder that is too small, you may find that the pedal goes all the way to the floor without fully releasing the clutch. Conversely, a master cylinder that is too large will result in a very short, stiff pedal stroke that is hard to modulate. Always check your total volume displacement to ensure the 1.38-inch stroke of the slave is fully utilized for a clean shift every time.
