Pro Tech Tips for Successful Installation

Thermal Expansion is Your Friend: To make the installation process much smoother and prevent galling the cylinder head, use temperature to your advantage. Heat the cylinder head in an oven to approximately 300-350F and keep your new valve guides in the freezer for at least an hour. The expansion of the head and the contraction of the guide often allow them to be installed with minimal force.

Use Proper Lubrication: Even when using the heat-and-freeze method, always apply a thin layer of high-pressure assembly lubricant or anti-seize to the outside of the valve guide. This provides an extra layer of protection against scoring the bore in the aluminum head as the guide is hammered or pressed into position.

Always Ream After Installation: Once the guides are installed and the head has completely cooled down, the inner diameter of the guide will likely have shrunk slightly due to the interference fit. You must use a valve guide reamer to finish the inside of the guide to the specific clearance required for your valve stems to ensure they do not seize during engine operation.
