OVERVIEW
When it comes to restoring the handling and structural integrity of your air-cooled Volkswagen''s rear suspension, the spring plates serve as the critical link between your torsion bars and the trailing arms. These Latest Rage IRS Spring Plates are engineered as high-quality stock replacements specifically designed for Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) setups utilizing the 21-3/4 inch torsion bars. Over decades of service, original factory spring plates can suffer from metal fatigue, rusting, or warping, which leads to a sagging rear end, poor wheel alignment, and a compromised ride quality. By installing these robust replacements, you are ensuring that your VW maintains the proper spring rate and geometry required for both daily street driving and spirited weekend cruising. These plates are sold as a pair to ensure that both sides of your transaxle benefit from equal tension and structural support, preventing the uneven "lean" often seen in older Beetles and Ghis.
Identifying the correct spring plate for your specific torsion housing can be a point of confusion for many enthusiasts, but these units are designed for the most common late-model IRS configurations. A definitive way to tell if these 21-3/4 inch plates are right for your project is to inspect your torsion housing end caps; if the cap at the end of the tube is solid and smooth, you are running the standard 21-3/4 inch bars. If there is a hole in the center with a torsion bar stub protruding, you likely have the longer 24-11/16 inch bars found on earlier swing axle or specific Type 3 models. These plates are precision-stamped to meet OEM specifications, providing a perfect seat for your torsion bar splines and a secure mounting point for your diagonal arms. Whether you are rebuilding a stock 1600cc Beetle or a custom Baja bug, these plates provide the dependable foundation your rear suspension demands.

PRO TIPS
Tip 1: Confirming Your Bar Length Before Ordering
One of the most common mistakes in VW suspension tuning is ordering the wrong length spring plates. Before you pull the trigger, verify your torsion bar length. If your car has been modified by a previous owner, the year of the vehicle might not match the hardware currently installed. As a rule of thumb, if your torsion housing end cap is flat and solid, these 21-3/4 inch plates are the correct choice. However, if there is a hole in the cap and the bar sticks out, you have the longer bars. Always measure from the very end of the spline to the other end of the spline to be 100% sure, as using the wrong plate will prevent the splines from fully engaging, leading to a dangerous mechanical failure.
Tip 2: Don''t Reuse Your Old Rubber Bushings
Whenever you have the spring plates off the car, it is the absolute best time to replace your torsion arm bushings. These spring plates require a 1-3/4 inch ID inner bushing and a 1-7/8 inch ID outer bushing. We highly recommend upgrading to high-density Urethane bushings during this installation. Urethane doesn''t deflect under load like stock rubber does, which means your rear alignment will stay true during hard cornering. Make sure to use a generous amount of silicone-based grease on the bushings to prevent the "squeak" that is common with aftermarket suspension components. Properly lubricated bushings will ensure a smooth, quiet ride while maximizing the lifespan of your new spring plates.
Tip 3: Indexing and Safety During Installation
Installing spring plates involves working with significant rotational tension from the torsion bars. Always use a floor jack to safely lower the spring plate off the lower stop once the bolts are removed. Before sliding the old plates off, use a paint pen or a scribe to mark the exact position of the splines on the torsion bar. This is called "indexing." If you don''t mark your position, you will spend hours trying to find the correct ride height through trial and error. Remember that moving the plate just one spline on the inner vs. outer side can change your ride height significantly. Once installed, always take the car for a professional four-wheel alignment, as changing spring plates directly affects your rear toe and camber settings.
