These EMPI Multi Shock Mounts (Part #6555) are engineered specifically for Volkswagen Swing Axle rear suspensions. They are a staple for custom off-road builds, including Dune Buggies, Sand Rails, and Baja Bugs. Note that these brackets bolt directly to the axle tube flange and are NOT compatible with IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) vehicles. Because these mounts relocate the lower shock eyes, they are designed for custom applications where the chassis or cage is built to accommodate non-stock shock positioning.

Pro Tech Tips for Installation

1. Prepare for Fabrication: These mounts are not a "bolt-on and drive" solution for stock Beetles. Because the new mounting points are positioned differently than the factory locations, the shocks will no longer align with the original upper shock towers. You will need to fabricate and weld custom upper shock mounts to your roll cage or frame horns to maintain the correct shock travel and angle.

2. Verify Bolt Length and Grade: These brackets install over the axle tube flange and the spring plate. This added thickness often requires longer-than-stock bolts. Always use Grade 8 or Metric 10.9 high-tensile hardware to ensure the assembly remains secure under the high leverage and vibration typical of off-road racing or sand dune use.

3. Balance Your Damping: When running dual shocks, you are doubling the resistance of your rear suspension. If you install two stiffly valved shocks, the ride may become too harsh, leading to poor traction and potential stress cracks in the mounts. For optimal performance, use two "softer" shocks; this distributes the workload, reduces fluid overheating (shock fade), and provides a more controlled response over rough terrain.
