Pro Tip 1: Measure Your Shock Travel Before Installation. To get the most protection, you must ensure the bump stop makes contact before your shock reaches its absolute bottom-out point. Pull the spring or torsion bar tension if possible, and cycle the suspension. The bump stop should be positioned so that it compresses fully just before the shock piston hits the bottom of the shock body. This prevents the shock from acting as the "stop," which is the leading cause of internal seal failure and bent shock shafts in off-road VWs.
Pro Tip 2: Use a Reinforcement Plate for Thin Tabs. If you are mounting these bump stops to a custom-welded tab on a sand rail or Baja, ensure the tab is at least 3/16-inch thick. If your mounting surface is thinner, the force of a hard bottom-out can bend the tab or pull the stud through the metal. Adding a simple 2-inch diameter "fender washer" or a secondary reinforcement plate on the back side of the mount will distribute the impact force across a larger surface area, preventing fatigue in the metal over time.
Pro Tip 3: Keep the Stud Clean and Don''t Overtighten. While urethane is incredibly tough, the molded-in stud relies on the integrity of the material around it. When installing, use the provided nylon lock nuts and tighten until the base of the bump stop is flush and firm against the mounting surface.
