OVERVIEW
When it comes to restoring the legendary handling and structural integrity of your air-cooled Volkswagen, the front axle beam is the foundation of your entire suspension system. This EMPI Axle Beam Needle Bearing is a precision-engineered component designed to facilitate the smooth, frictionless rotation of the torsion arms within the beam tubes. Over decades of service, original factory bearings often succumb to grease starvation, moisture intrusion, and the relentless vibration of the road, leading to "flat spots" or scarred needle rollers. Replacing these bearings with high-quality EMPI units is essential for eliminating front-end "slop," reducing steering wheel vibration, and ensuring that your torsion leaves can react to road imperfections exactly as the engineers in Wolfsburg intended. Whether you are rebuilding a classic King Pin beam or refreshing a later Ball Joint front end, these bearings provide the tight tolerances necessary for a professional-grade restoration.
The versatility of this specific needle bearing (Part # 111-401-301) makes it a staple in any VW enthusiast''s garage. It serves as both the upper and lower bearing for the 1960 through 1965 King Pin models, and transitions into the primary upper bearing for the 1966 and later Ball Joint models. At Appletree Automotive, we understand that suspension geometry is only as good as its pivot points. A failed or seized bearing can cause the torsion arm to gall the inner surface of the axle beam, leading to catastrophic failure and expensive housing replacements. By installing these hardened steel needle bearings, you are investing in the longevity of your vehicle''s chassis. These bearings are manufactured to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, ensuring that your Beetle or Karmann Ghia maintains its characteristic nimble feel on winding backroads or during high-speed highway cruising.

PRO TIPS
1. Precision Installation is Critical
When installing new needle bearings, never use a standard hammer directly against the bearing face, as this can distort the thin outer cage and pin the needles in place. Always use a dedicated bearing driver or a soft-faced puck that matches the outer diameter of the bearing race. Before pressing the new bearing into the beam tube, ensure the inner surface of the tube is meticulously cleaned of old, hardened grease and burrs. Applying a light film of assembly lube to the outside of the bearing will help it slide into position without galling the beam. Remember to seat the bearing to the correct depth specified in your shop manual; if the bearing is seated too shallow or too deep, it will not align correctly with the bearing surface of the torsion arm.
2. The Importance of High-Pressure Grease
Needle bearings are incredibly strong under radial loads but are highly sensitive to contamination and lack of lubrication. Once the bearings are installed and the torsion arms are inserted, you must use a high-quality Moly-Disulfide or Lithium-based high-pressure grease. Pump grease into the Zerk fittings on the axle beam until you see fresh grease purging past the outer seals. This "purge" method ensures that any air pockets are removed and that the needle rollers are fully encapsulated in lubricant. For cars that sit for long periods, we recommend greasing the beam at least once a year to displace any moisture that may have condensed inside the beam tubes, which can cause the needles to rust and seize.
3. Checking for Beam Wear Before Assembly
Before you press in your new bearings, take a moment to inspect the torsion arms themselves. If a bearing has failed previously, it often leaves a "shadow" or physical indentation on the torsion arm surface where the needles ride. If you can feel a ridge or pitting with your fingernail on the torsion arm, the new bearing will fail prematurely. In such cases, the torsion arm must be replaced or professionally machined. Additionally, check the inner brass or phenolic bushings (located further inside the beam) while the arms are out. A perfect front end requires both the outer needle bearings and the inner bushings to be in top condition to prevent the "Death Wobble" often associated with worn VW front suspensions.
