Fuel Tank Sender Gasket, Fits Beetle All Years Except Super
* Fits all Type 1 Beetles.
* Does not fit Super Beetles.
* Replaces worn-out fuel tank sender gaskets.
OVERVIEW
When you are behind the wheel of a classic air-cooled Volkswagen, the last thing you want to experience is the pungent aroma of raw gasoline wafting into the cabin. A failing or brittle fuel tank sender gasket is one of the most common culprits for fuel leaks and vapor issues in vintage Beetles. This EMPI fuel tank sender gasket is engineered to provide a robust, airtight seal between your fuel tank and the sending unit, ensuring that your fuel stays exactly where it belongs. Manufactured from high-quality, fuel-resistant elastomer, this gasket is designed to withstand the harsh chemical composition of modern ethanol-blended fuels, which often degrade original cork or inferior rubber seals over time. Whether you are performing a full body-off restoration or simply tackling a weekend maintenance project, replacing this inexpensive seal is a critical step in maintaining the safety and integrity of your fuel system.
Precision is paramount when dealing with vintage VW fuel systems, and this gasket delivers an exact OEM-spec fit for the standard 5-hole sending units found in the vast majority of Type 1 chassis. Because the fuel tank is located directly above the front trunk and in close proximity to the passenger compartment, a dry-rotted gasket can lead to dangerous leaks during spirited cornering or when filling the tank to its maximum capacity. By choosing this EMPI 98-2037-0 gasket, you are investing in a component that meets or exceeds original factory standards (OEM 113-919-133). It provides the necessary compression to bridge any minor surface irregularities on the tank flange, giving you peace of mind that your fuel gauge will remain accurate and your trunk floor will remain dry. Don''t let a two-dollar part compromise your driving experience or safety; upgrade to a fresh seal today and keep those gas fumes out of your cockpit.

PRO TIPS
1. Surface Preparation is Everything
Before installing your new gasket, it is absolutely vital to clean the mounting surface on the top of the fuel tank. Years of debris, old gasket residue, and light surface rust can prevent a perfect seal. Use a fine Scotch-Brite pad or a brass wire brush to gently clean the flange until it is smooth. Wipe the area down with a lint-free rag and a bit of brake cleaner to ensure no oily residue remains. A clean surface ensures the rubber can "bite" into the metal, preventing vapor leaks that are common with rushed installations.
2. Use the Star Tightening Pattern
When bolting the sending unit back onto the tank, never tighten the screws in a circular sequence. To ensure even pressure across the entire circumference of the gasket, always use a "star pattern" or "cross pattern." Start by getting all five screws started by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten one screw slightly, then move to the one directly across from it. Gradually increase the torque on each screw until they are all snug. This prevents the gasket from bunching up or pinching on one side, which is the leading cause of leaks on brand-new seals.
3. Check Your Float Alignment and Ground
While you have the sending unit out to replace the gasket, take a moment to inspect the float arm. Ensure the arm moves freely and isn''t rubbing against the side of the tank or the internal baffle. Additionally, the fuel sender relies on a good ground connection to provide an accurate reading on your dashboard gauge. If your tank has been freshly painted, make sure the area under the screw heads is clean so the sender can ground properly through the mounting screws. If you still have erratic readings, consider running a dedicated ground wire from one of the sender mounting screws directly to the chassis.
