1. Verify Piston Ring End Gap Before Installation

3. Mind the Piston Direction and Pin Offset

VW pistons are designed with an "offset" wrist pin to reduce "piston slap" and engine noise. Look for the arrow stamped on the crown of the piston. This arrow must always point toward the flywheel (the front of the car in a standard Beetle configuration). If you install the pistons backward, the geometry of the rod and piston will be incorrect, leading to premature wear on the cylinder walls and a much noisier engine. Double-check every piston orientation before you slide the cylinders home to ensure your 40hp build runs as quietly and efficiently as the factory intended.
